Actually, if the NBN criples or kills off optarse, it would be worth it whatever the price. Had another one of the droppings from the Indian sub-continent interrupt my work on the Nav by telling me he was from our local telephone exchange. "Lying bastard" brought out an optarse identification card. Had to tell the thick bastard three times to get off the property.

One good thing about living in an apartment complex, they can't even get into the property without a key...

Some of the hut's down here have like 150 pairs and a few pairs gains sytems and thats it.

Lol.

Ahh! Some of the big exchanges. Some of the rural Qld exchanges I've worked on topped out at 10 customers. This little place called Teelba, a couple of hours outside St George. All it was was a hut on a sheep station. Mid winter, ice on the shower rose, and the technicians (converting old analogue exchange to a RIM) were wandering around in shorts and t shirt. Good times. I was glad to get back to the office though :)

^ 10 customers bloody hell.

I take it, it had a 50 pair or a 100 pair for growth ?

Well close. We were pulling out an old ARF analog exchange and putting in a 30 pair RIM or something similar.

Not sure about growth. It wasin the middle of absolute nowhere.

Just had to think then, Hmmmm I will check some of the huts in the middle of nowhere.

None are as small as the one you mentioned though.

According to the cousin, many country farming locations are going back wards fast with population. No work of the farm, farm amalgamations and kids already know how hard and chancy farming is, so they go elsewhere.

Ran into a Network Construction guy the other day and he telling me, out of 4500 exchanges in Australia, 900 are to be setup for the NBN.

Sure some huts will be decommisioned but its gonna leave alot of areas off the NBN.

Apparently any exchange with less then 1000 customers will not get the NBN.

:sarcastic: but don't you know that we are going to fix that with wireless or satellite so they'll have the same speed :sarcastic:
<why isn't there a flying pig thingamajig>

I'm not sure if they have always said that, but that has been around for a while. Part of it was keeping the cost down; base price for the NBN installation saved at 3,500 exchanges. I think it was when the percentage of people to be "serviced" went down.

My 2 is that the NBN should remain in public hands and not create another monopoly like Tel$tra and over time it should be expanded to 100%.

My only worry is whether the ISPs are going to use it as another opportunity to rort.

Well Telstra started rolling out the 4G network in Sydney recently.

I can think of about 10 SCAX's that will still be without ADSL once the NBN starts being built.

Wasn't the point of the NBN to provide rural customers with broadband ?

Wireless, not a fan myself.

I get satellite through the broadband government guarantee, And i feel special 5 gig for the absolute ripoff of $40 a month. Media going on about new 4g super fast wireless for us privileged people in the BUSH. F@#kin wonderful faster internet so you run out of download quicker. How about decent plan size. If i sold my house and moved about 2 km down the road i could get adsl

The speed that my internet runs at before it gets shaped i am happy with. The nobs in Canberra should do more about the size of the plans rather than speed

What details, Have they given anything out other than a couple of dribs and drabs. I wish i could find out about plan size and speeds

I went though them ages ago because I actually gave a crap but these days I just don't care and think that for most part it's a massive waste to spend so much money on materials that will be outdated before they are fully implemented.

And lets face it the NBN wont automatically make websites like this and so many others work faster so what else do people want the net for?

The problem is what do you believe. Most documents you will find are written by the same government who wrote the documentation on the Carbon tax and so many dismiss that as a pile of crap so why wouldn't the NBN documents also be a load of crap?

Have to agree with Krafty about uses for fast internet. Mine seems to be fast enough for what I use it for even though it's by no means fast.

Cheers Brad

Streaming video content would benefit some folks... but i can't help but agree with most of you guys. By the time the network is in place it will be outdated.

On a side note, if only we Australians knew how much we were getting ripped off for broadband plans compared to the Yanks... you should do a google search for a normal plan over there with, say, Verizon or AT&T... We all knew it already but you, Telstra, you sir are a d*ck.
