Positive always. There's a chance that the winch will have a connection on the negative side through the chassis, so a switch in the negative feed might not be effective.
 
Is it safe to assume that most modern vehicles these days are negatively ground so you would isolate the positive feed to the winch.
 
Well I finally put in the isolator switch. Jaycar had one rated continuous at 500amps and has a spike value of about 2000amps for 5 secs. Mounted it on the battery tray.

Sort of, Rob! Not all deep cycles like having 400A or more drawn out. That's about the only problem with them.

If you use an auxiliary that is capable of delivering that power (look at the CCA rating on the battery, that shows how many amps you can safely draw) then just give the battery enough time to recharge later.

It's not hard to calculate. Say you're winching for 2 minutes, and we'll assume for ease of the exercise that the winch took 400A for the whole time. That works out to be 400*2/60 = 13Ah used. At 20A charge rate (reasonable for an engine not being worked too hard) it'll take almost 45 minutes to recharge what was used.
