Yeah but until it's proven that the entire country doesn't need their hand held then the someone has to be there to do it. Plenty of people say they don't want to be nannied or that they don't need the government interference but many of them still do require it. They have to govern for the lowest common denominator and too many people have allowed themselves to become that denominator.

Bullshit terry. I have worked for myself for 20 years and I've paid a shitload in tax and in some cases it will be more than some pleb working for someone elses dollar. I do agree that every government takes tax and it wouldn't make any difference if the Libs were in power we'd still be getting taxed the only difference is the taxes would have different names but not all self employed people avoid tax or write everything off.

People blaming the current government for the taxes we all pay as if it's all their fault fail to see the large picture. Sure Julia might have introduced some controversial taxes but if for a second they believe Tony and his cronies wouldn't have done their best to rain in just as many tax dollars they are dreaming.

Never used a hospital, road, school, etc? And the reality is that you're paying about the same tax as you did under Howard -- you just prefer to blame the government (and it wouldn't matter which flavour of government) for your perceived problems and injustices.

The biggest difference is that while they tax as high as the left, conservatives (you'll note that I say conservative and not liberal party because I regard both labor and liberal as one and the same on this issue) want small governments, thus hive off essential services to the private sector -- so we pay for the service twice, or its only available to those that can afford it.

When it comes to governance I think we need to get rid of one tier. As much as I hate local government I can't see getting rid of councils being a good thing because people need local representation and a state government being responsible for a road in the country or a rubbish collection in the country wont work. Far better to make all council positions (or atleast the top level ones) elected positions where the local residents can oust a CEO or Department head for not getting results.

We obviously need a Federal government despite the fact that the current pinheads don't work so that leaves state governments to get the chop. In this state, Big Ted, Little Ted and all their PITA suit wearing pricks can get the fcuk out of the public purse and get real jobs.

And the worst thing about that is the number of people who were fully insured who took hand outs just because they were available. I know that wasn't everyone and some people truly did need handouts but taking something just because it's there and not because you need it isn't far short of ripping off welfare.

that is why government handouts can be good, if its given to lower income brackets there more inclined to spend and it goes up The chain, give a tax break to a higher income earner and it may just end up sitting in The bank.
