UHF radio and antenna

Hi all, just looking at getting a uhf radio.

Interested in getting a GME 3340 along with a GME AE4702 aerial. Does anyone out there have these in there car and what are your thoughts on them??? I dont want to block up under the radio so thats why Im going this model

ARB Kilsyth have them at $449 for the radio and about $170 for the aerial. Have since found them for $371 and $115 at batteryshack.com.au who a friend has successfully purchased from before.

I was thinking of mounting the mic on the dash below left side of the speedo where there is a spare switch cover.

i haven't used one personally, but a friend has one (TX3340 radio) in his Landcruiser and raves about it. i think i'm going to go for the TX3420.

I highly recommend the Icom 440, it has the speaker in the mic, the GME doesn't.

i have the gme tx3440 the next one up from the tx3340 which u wish to purchase...i have the GME AE4018K1 antenna and its the best unit ever...the only real difference i notice between the 3440 and 3340 is the size of the actual main unit itself everything else is pretty much same. i would recommend the gme unit personally ive been told the ICOM 440 speakers are of low quality and dont last long and hense u need to replace the whole microphone unit.

altogether the unit cost me $439 including frieght with the antenna from battery shack...look at there package deals

Rather than recommending a unit I recommend Prestige, we used to do all out dealings face to face with a guy in Moorabin but since he closed down (about 12 years ago) we have been dealing with Prestige and despite them being on the other side of the country we've never had an issue with them and their prices have always been good.

I have the TX4400, never had a problem with it, you won't have a problem with ICOM either, they are the ducks nuts. I used to sell a few brands in a previous occupation and ICOM was held in very high regard.

I can also recommend Prestige, I bought my TX4400 from them, great to deal with.

hmmm, i think i might be leaning towards the ICOM... I'm sure both units are great, but I like the speaker being in the microphone meaning no obstruction/ muffling of sound unlike what may happen with the GME

get an icom.

in 2011 the UHF channels are all changing so having a radio that can be reprogrammed is handy as...

plus the icom is built to military spec; my mate ran over it with his disco and it was fine, lol. they really are a solid piece of equipment i must say.

plus if programmed, you can use 25w on the uhf 40 channels (illegal yes, but if you're out wheeling by yourself and get stuck that 25w can help save you, even if its getting attention from the government for using too much power haha)

I ordered my GME Tx3440 from prestige comms also. Delivered to my door in two working days. Its a good radio had no issues at all.

I work in defence industry and can confirm that ICOM are mil spec and are used by the military too. Great units. My next UHF will be ICOM the one that came in my Nav is statring to grind my gears, Ae lead needs reterminating too.

i ordered it wednesday night and had it within 36hrs!!! Now thats good service. Online purchase from Prestige communications and I can only say good things about my experience. Packaging was fantastic and all contents were in great condition.

Now my only task is to work out where to mount the box connected to the mic... any ideas? must be hidden

I've put mine inside the centre console, there is heaps of room in front of the gear lever on the manual, I'm guessing the auto would be similar.

Up under one of the front seats is also another option.

Fitted it all today.


First job was to cut a new hole in the fire wall as the only other point through it was already full. New grommit installed and looks like new. I ran the antenna and power cables under the carpet and along the drivers side door sil.

From there i mounted the transciever under the drivers seat. It had to go there as the transciever doesn't fit up behind the steering wheel or in front of the gear stick (in the d22). If i'd have purchased the GME 3340 it would defianetly tuck up behind the steering wheel but the ICOM's reciever is just a bit big.

once the transciever was mounted under the seat I ran the mic extension cable under the carpet and popped it out behind the clutch pedal.
From there I cut a small hole in the facia under the steering wheel and pocked the mic cable through and then mounted the mic on the left side of the steering wheel on one of the spare switch covers.

It all took a bit of time as i'm a bit anal with fit and finish. Has to look standard, but all up Antenna mounting, transciever mounting, mic positioning and running cables was about 4 hours...

I'll have detailed pics up in the next few days.
