Hello all

I've just fitted a steel winch bar to my D40 and, as would be expected when you hang a lump of steel on the end, the nose has sagged a little. I have held off putting the winch on as don't want to make it sag further.

As I see it I have three options to correct this:

1) 2inch lift kits to raise it back up ($$$$$ I don't have right now but would be good to have in due course for ground clearance)

2) get some stiffer springs to counter the extra weight (no idea on cost but presumably a chunk cheaper than a full lift) as this would then reuse the existing shocks etc

3) Strut spacers, but not sure if this will achieve the result of correcting the sag or just loose me some travel:

Does anybody have any thoughts/commendations on these or indeed other options.

Cheers

Steven

hi i am doing the same and are looking at a 2 inch lift kit to fix the problem

the strut spacers are the cheapest option to get your ground clearence back, i wouldnt worry about losing down travel if your springs are already shot.

You need heavier springs. The stock springs not only have less strength, but the extra weight will deform the front springs faster and sooner or later you'll be whacking bump stops.

Spacers won't fix lighter springs. You'll raise your car a little, sure, but the springs will still compress harder during impacts. I doubt that'll do the shocks any favours either, but the factory shocks aren't the best, particularly under load.

I would only consider two options.

New HD Springs in front (cheapest option and short term fix)

OR

2" Lift, New shocks springs leafs shackles bushes. I also needed offset bushes cause I ran out of camber adjustment and was running positive after the lift. If your in qld hit up zordo. He has a great range of options and great prices with a shitload of advise.

I got my kit off him, installed my self with a better part of a saturday and I couldnt be happier.

Cheers fellas, going to explore the heavy springs option further as budgets don't allow for full fit yet. Have dropped Zordo a line to see what he can do.

Cheers

I have seen a chance to get a set of Dobinson two inch heavy duty lift springs for the front of my D40 but cash wouldn't run to also replacing the shocks as well at the moment.

Is it possible to fit the two inch springs now to correct steel bar/winch sag without upgrading the shocks yet? And then when funds allow ill do the shocks as well.

Cheers

I don't know how much the standard shocks will extend. I'd have to imagine that they'd cover the full range of motion in the D40 with standard struts and control arms.

You could fit new coils to the std shocks & then change the at a later date.
Bit of a double up in labour.
You are better of just waiting & do the coils & front shocks
Pair of front shocks $370
Cheers

Zordo, thanks for the reply. You are probably right on the best the wait recommendation.........just frustrating to have the winch sitting in the garage and not able to fit until suspension done.
