Anyone out there using a Whistler radar detector. I won one in a raffle on ANZAC day and havnt been through a speed camera yet? WAS just wondering if they are effective or not?

Apart from them being illegal, their usage is detectable (the superheterodyne components give off a unique RF signal which can be picked up by the police) and they're also quite useless because the police are using hand-held lasers in their mobile units.

The fixed speed cameras use radar, but if you can't read the signs that they plaster all around them, you deserve to get pinged for it.

Aren't they still legal here in WA? I have a Bel unit that's built in to the bull bar, it has 3 sensors up the front and 1 up the back. I didn't buy it, it came with the Nav, worth about 3 grand. It is utterly useless against all forms of Laser (gun and multi-nova) but it's terrific when I'm heading out to the farm and the odd coppa tried to zap me from a distance with his inboard radar gun. I'm not a speeder myself but I find it amusing when she goes off on a long drive

Not in WA, lol. They are illegal, but at this point in time the WA police don't have the ability to detect radar detectors

You can also get "invisible" radar detectors that they can't detect

You can get away with a fair bit here is WA. We only just got our first fixed speed camera.. It's a tourist attraction!

personally I dont see the point since it's like trying to dodge after the bullet has hit you, too late. The old radars only worked about 400m, new ones do much further....

Not illegal in WA, Also If you have a good unit it will shut down a long time before it can be detected by the police , and the laser being used in the mobile units that you say makes using a detector '' quite useless because the police are using hand-held lasers in their mobile units.'' are easy to pick up if you have the right detector and set up!:redcool:

This is one of the best old units. It sits in my draw collecting dust

To the original Question, It gets a bit more complex than the brand of detector you use, their are many different models of your detector and different versions of software that the unit may be programmed with, Dont thrust it unless you know its capability's and how to adjust the settings ( if your whistler has that option).

Most cops dont carry radar detectors. there not built into speed cameras or guns. i know a cop and he said they have one at our cop shop but know one even knows where it is lol

Most don't. And just like many people have had their "technically unroadworthy" cars assessed after an accident and had insurance claims paid out, it's something I won't risk, because "most don't" means that "some might".

Knowing MY luck, I'll have the detector turned on and will be lucky enough to drive past the ONLY guy in the country with a detector detector on that day.

They are legal in WA. They also work well. They pick lazer up as well. I have a belltronics one. Road side speed cameras they aren't much chop untill your on them but mobile radar and lazer they are brilliant

I got 400m today on that VW caddy with the laser camera that's been getting around, I was impressed

What detector do you recommended gadget

I use the Valentine 1 , its a bit old school but can be programmed to suit your exact needs, its complicated to set up but its well worth it if you do it right!
