Fitted a number plate bracket LED , fitted to a switch but I’m going to get the STEDI wiring harness that taps into the full beam

Someone I know had one of these fitted to their car, with some driving lights attached. The pink slip examiner told this person to remove the fitting, not because the lights were bad, but because the bracket inhibited traffic cameras from seeing the number plate at angles higher than 45 degrees.

They took the car elsewhere and got their pink slip. I don't know if it's right or not (either way). In my mind, if there is a rule about number plate visibility above 45 degrees, you'd have to find a real ornery HWP copper (who hadn't found enough motorcyclists to pull over) to give you any curry over it.

A mate got booked for having an over width sign obscuring the number plate at a certain angle obviously not at the camera angle as thats how they fined him, almost put him out of business due to accumulated fines all delivered at once.

Same could be said about bull bars, a lot have the bar above the number plate , never heard of it being an issue in Scotland, maybe in the US ,
The camera would have to be at a very high angle to not be able to read mine

I believe the states intend to come to an agreement on this and in Vic they're talking about changing the legislation to allow speed camera operators to issue tickets if their system detects that it doesn't have the required visibility to the plate. I don't know they intend to identify who it is though as presumably, they won't be able to adequately make out the plate. ;)

Agreed, the UK annual test (mot) is very specific about the number plate font and character spacing but not on viewing angles.

You will fail the test if the plate is obscured, but there are no specifics on angles for number plate recognition.

Perhaps they don't use overhead speed cameras to the extent we have them in Australia.

Our numerous fixed ones tend to be in various overhead structures, such as overpasses on the freeways/tollways, etc. It's to make sure those ones collect enough revenue that we have the laws concerning number plates. The mobile ones are generally on a car parked on the side of the road (pretty easy to spot because of the antenna array and suspicious location). Then of course there are the ones the cops have built into their cars. I believe in some states they have ones that have the sensors on both the front and rear of the cars, so they can get both coming and going.

From a Qld perspective the height comes into it. As long as the number plate can be read from any direction at a 45 degree angle from a distance of 20 your all good.
Quite right, and the same in all states. I was simply pointing out that the reason behind that 45 degree requirement is due to the extensive use of overhead speed cameras. I hadn't intended to imply that the height was a factor in itself.

No problem. I haven't consumed alcohol since I got gout.

Same here, actually. But right at this moment, in order to function (I'm still at Mt Panorama for the 6 Hour, and tomorrow is a drive day hosted by Ferrari) I'm on Alliprinol and Meloxicam. Motorsport Australia also like their race officials sober.

That said, we're a little off topic now, although a "light bar" could be a place that only serves low-carb beer.

Or warm low carb beer if you're in the UK.
