Ok I just had a question that I can’t seem to find anything about online. I have been getting a rattle at start up on my 08 d22. Been looking through the threads here and the consensus was go with a genuine Nissan oil filter ( I had a ryco on it) to stop the oil flowing out of the filter and back into the sump. Supposedly the Nissan filter has a non return valve to stop this and get rid of the tensioner being dry and causing chain rattle on cold start . Well I put a Nissan filter on it and although it sounds a bit quieter the rattle is still there on start up . How do I know if the filter has a non return valve? If it turns out the filter does have one does that mean the tensioner is on the way out? Appreciate any help
 
If you look on the box for the Ryco filter it says it also has a non-return valve. And more importantly, I don't think Nissan make their own filters - they brand someone else's. Not sure if that's Ryco, or Cooper (which is Chinese cheap stuff - but these work ok too) or some other brand, but I am pretty sure that Nissan aren't in the business of making oil filters.

I've used Ryco filters (pretty sure there's a Ryco on there right now) and have no problems with them.

I'd suggest grabbing a mechanic's stethoscope and having a listen to the timing chain housing to be certain the rattle's coming from there.
 
To reinforce what Old.Tony said, Nissan does not make their own filters. In fact, no automotive brand does. I've not yet found out who does make them for Nissan but Ryco is a very reputable brand and is used by many (most?) non-dealership mechanics. I personally use Sakura filters, although there are some who bag them for some odd reason. Sakura makes "OEM" filters for a number of brands but Nissan doesn't appear to be one of them. I've cut open both those brands and have tested the filtration as best I am able to without specialised equipment and find there is nothing between them. Internally there are pros and cons for each but nothing significant to indicate one is superior to the other. There is however a massive price difference.

If you can't get your hands on a stethoscope, another substitute is a screwdriver. It's surprisingly effective. For the record, the handle end goes to the ear.
 
I understand that the Nissan filters are made by Mann Hummel. They are both black with the same numbers etc, just the Mann filter is without the Nissan logo.

I've been running YD 25's for 12 years now and changed 300k km of oil and filters and I can categorically state that fitting a genuine filter will result in your oil pressure light going out quicker than ryco or repco. Other brands I have not tried.

The filter on the YD engine is fitted upside down so has an anti drain back valve fitted.
If the valve leaks it takes longer to attain oil pressure on start up after standing for a while.

I contend that the genuine filter has a superior valve.

As for the start up rattle - if its coming from the general direction of the timing chain and quiets down after a few secs , then very good chance its the top timing chain tensioner.
The tensioner is partly spring loaded but also relies on oil pressure pumped through a very narrow galley.
Fact so far but now to speculation -, Either the galley gets partially blocked - or the oil leaks out - dont know how it comes about but you should find that if this is indeed the problem then the rattle should quiet at the same time the oil light goes out, which will be longer than desirable as you are'nt getting full pressure till the tensioner is happy.
So a failing tensioner is not good for your engine on the whole, just as a cheap filter which doesn't hold the oil well isnt good for it.
And if your engine is busy filling the filter its takes longer to bring the tensioner to pressure.
Anyway - I replaced the top tensioner in my D40 and rattle gone.
Chain was fine as per the wear test procedure and the guide showed no noticeable wear.

It definitely gets up to pressure quicker as per the pulley. I do starts in about down to -4 in the morning during winter so I am very concerned about it getting that oil ASAP.

Mm no I dont think that is correct.
Pretty sure Ryco's have the valve but in my experience- going on the oil light duration - the valve is not as effective as the Nissan / Mann.

However it is, I'll continue to use genuine or Mann or either

Bought mine from the local Nissan dealer - as I recall it was sub $200

Bought mine from the local Nissan dealer - as I recall it was sub $200

But that was a D40.
 
Just do a quick check, pour some water on your belts when it's rattling. I would never have believed that noise was belts but it was.

I found the info somewhere hidden in this forum and with a change of belts I no longer think my engine is going to cost me 5 grand.

Brand new belts on it. And the rattle goes away when the oil light goes off .

EA is your best filter in the industry at 25.000 miles chain intervals not 10.000 k.m price is cheaper too.
