There has to be a main fuse then. Have a look under the bonnet for a black box on the side, there should be large fuses and/or relays inside. Also, roughly where are you from? If you're near Newcastle I'll happily come around and look, gotta be easier than text-mode diagnostics!
 
I hope you have some joy with the indicator flasher unit. Don't forget the brake lights. I've got a feeling that the brake lights will be fine, but the flasher can is probably toast.

That alternator probably has worn bushes, might be worth getting your friend to take a look at that, could save you a few bucks.

Dion: there's a knob on the end of the choke lever. I couldn't get the thing off so that the choke could be removed from the dash, does it unscrew? There's no grub screw holding it in place. This needs to come out so the dash can be removed.
 
thanks heaps yeah i will check that to night flashes will be done when i get this stupid dash out window comes out on sunday

Sorry I missed this post Tony. I told bloodviper how to do it via PM but I will publish it here for future readers: you have to pull it out to its full stroke, then grip the rod with pliers to hold it still. Then, push the knob in, twist anticlockwise, and pull off.
