^ Locking them before you leave home is a valid idea. The D40 doesn't have locking hubs, the hubs are engaged at all times, and the transfer case keeps the front and rear disengaged (which is also the case in the D22's transfer case).

The BIG, HUMUNGOUS advantage of lockable hubs is when you've got a boat or a caravan and you need to move it on a steep incline. Put the D22 into 4LO and just forget to lock the front hubs ... perfect.

Yep. And they also recommend running around with the hubs locked in once a month or so to keep the front drive line turning over, to help throw some oil around inside the diff....

Not a fan of the various auto hub types. Especially the ones that remain locked in constantly. At least with manual hubs if you're in a remote area and break a cv/ axle or something, you're a chance of simply unlocking the hubs and can continue in 2 wheel drive.
