Hi all how can I tell if a car I am looking at has the 450nm updated engine?
Is there a code in the VIN? I have been looking at a car on carsales and it is a 2010 stx with the updated interior but states that is has the older 403nm motor.

Any help appreciated.

I think the turbo actuator is electronic rather than vacuum operated. There is a difference in the head but without stripping down the engine I don't think you'll spot it. 2010 was the year when the STX got the new motor - early builds will have the 126kW/403Nm donk and the later will have the 140kW/450Nm. If the build date is March or earlier, I'd bet on the 126kW.

Not that it's a bad engine - I am happy with mine, although the more powerful engine does use a little less fuel.

I don't think the VIN has detail about the engine power unless you use that VIN to query the Nissan database (via a Nissan dealer) and find out that way.

If I remember its pretty much the sane engine just different turning & like Tony said different turbo.

140/450 v 126/400

There not the same. Quiet different i may add.

Completely different new cylinder head on the 140/450.
Electric turbo actuation on the 140/450
No DPF on 140/450kw engines

The 140/450 code name is YD25 2010

Previous engine codes were

YD25 D22
YD25 Type 1 (Manuals with no DPF)
YD25 Type 2 (Auto's with DPF)

Here's some pics to help you

IF the cars a 2010 STX i'd think it's a 140/450 engine

I'm thinking the coathanger wrapped around the intercooler feed hose would be the biggest giveaway that it's a 140kw motor. None of the 126's had that type of hose.

The wire wrap around was a flop as most of them like mine split in between the wire.
when Nissan changed mine under warranty they said that the new part doesnt have the wire for that reason.

The most obvious way is to look at the angle of the pipe where it connects to the turbo, the 140kw motor will have the pipe at a steep angle where as the 126kw will be flat (look at the pics above and you will pick it) and it is for that reason why the later models cant buy off the shelf the hard piping upgrade from places like "Plazmaman"
