which power upgrade to choose

Hi all,
We own a 2011 d40 navara dual cab rx model 2.5 diesel.
After some advice on power upgrades and value for money. The reason for more power is for towing and the lack of power when taking off and dead spots at low rpm when going uphill.
Is a chip going to solve my problem? I'd so is it necessary for me to upgrade my exhaust as well.

Should I go for a intercooler upgrade? From I have read thus seems like a good option with lots of benefits to my engine longevity. But will it alone be enough to give me the extra power I am looking for.

Would also like opinions on best bang for buck on chip-exhaust-intercooler?

Or is there something else I can do
 
There are a large number of things you can do to increase power, but there are some aspects of the D40's YD25 arrangement that need more attention to overcome.

The lag is there for a reason - the D40 is tuned to provide more power in boost by providing more boost - compare the D22 YD25's 13-14 psi (96kW) with your D40 YD25's 20-24psi (126kW). There are other factors that provide the extra power as well, but when driving the two cars, you'll find that power delivery in the D22 is much smoother, but the D40 will take off quicker.

The biggest leap in performance will come from a chip (consider Unichip or Steinbauer). Never consider No-Limits - they're just dangerous, all they do is modify the return signal from the fuel rail pressure sensor so that the ECU ramps up the pump's output. A chip will help with that lag.

Another big leap in performance comes from diesel gas. It requires the installation of LPG bottle. If you run out of gas, your performance returns to normal.

A new intercooler will cost you $$ and give you a marginal - and perhaps not even noticeable - increase in performance.

You might consider blocking the EGR - again, you might not notice much gain but the turbo will spool a little earlier.

Cleaning the injectors (Liqui Moly Diesel Injector Clean) is always worth doing. This will also clean up the SCV.

You can also replace the charge air hoses (any hose between the turbo and the intake manifold - again, you won't gain much and will improve the lag but only by a small margin.

It's a bit of "each to their own" though. We tow a 2.5T caravan (when we can!) and mostly are happy with the performance. I wouldn't mind a smaller fuel bill - we get mid-to-high 18LPHK on average (we did about 4,000km at Christmas and returned about 18.7LPHK for the whole trip).

i bought a 2nd hand steinbauer chip from this site for $500. love it. i also have a 3" exhaust with no muffler or cat and a plazaman hot pipe. it goes pretty good and havent had any clutch problems but i only tow a 17ft ally centre console. if u chip it id recommend fitting an egt gauge just to monitor the exhaust temps when your towing
 
I would go for a larger turbo back exhaust. 2.75" or even 3". EGR block, Inter-cooler hot side hard pipe upgrade. As your towing these mods will help off idle performance. Where you really need it. As Old Tony points out having the SCV and injectors up to spec is a good starting point to.

Dollar for Dollar a chip would give the best increase however they do make the engine more highly stressed. Something that towing will do in it's self. So I would leave the chipsters skulduggery as a last resort.

As for the Inter-cooler upgrade. Personally I'd forget it. Sure there can be more outright power and bring down EGT's a little but the extra power wont be off idle. In fact having a larger volume of plumbing work to fill before the boost arrives at the inlet valves could even be detrimental to off idle performance.
 
Awesome, thanks for the great advice fellas. I have done the EGR a while ago and yes it probably made a very small difference in throttle response, no difference to fuel economy.

I think I will opt for the hot pipe modification at this stage. I think I'm a little like you Old Tony, sometimes it can be few and far between on camping trips so I didnt want to overcapitalise(so to speak)

We just finished the Bloomfield track towing so I'm not completely too unhappy.

Will give some of that injector clean stuff a go also. Just racked up 90,000kms.

Just another quick question..... Is an ECU re-map pretty much the same as installing a chip?
 
ECU remap has a similar result as chip modules. At the end of the day, it's more fuel there is no free lunch. Some chips will just up the fuel rail pressure others will adjust the injector opening duration and or timing to. The advantage of some chips is you can easily adjust the tune and if necessary remove the thing altogether. The advantage of remaps, is there is just so many parameters that can be adjusted even things like turning off the EGR valve. It can still keep the factory safe guards in place, as well there is no additional wiring. It looks stock standard. The disadvantage is there is no going back (not easily) or if you get someone who doesn't know what there doing can turn the ECU into a door stop. As mentioned, not really a fan of it but if was going to go down that road the re-map would be my preferred option.

^ and on the other side of that coin, a chip can be easily removed and you're back to standard - easy to go back and forward if you wish.

But the key advice from Tappet should never, ever be underestimated or misunderstood - more power will require more fuel. Whether it's a chip, or LPG injection ("diesel gas") or a remap, you're putting more fuel in to get the extra beans.

Done properly - a good remap on a dyno, for instance - and you'll definitely be happy with the results. They can tune it so that it uses the least amount of fuel for the most gain - but you're looking at a considerable expense there, by a specialist outfit, and if you're towing past Mt Augustus and need to get something fixed at Exmouth Nissan and they reflash your ECU, the custom program is gone.

That's not to say the chip is better - most chips are generic, and every chip without exception will ruin your warranty. Diesel gas might as well - and diesel gas is obvious once it's installed.

Lots of caveats no matter which way you go. You could just change to a more sedate set of music, have some nice munchies available in-cabin and play lots more "Let's count the blue cars" games on the highways!
 
Water methanol injection is quite good also...you will pay probs $500-900 for a good kit..and if you can fit it yourself thats where the cost ends....well apart from the methanol...($1.20 per ltr)
Its good as you can have a on/off switch...want power...turn it on...dont need it turn it off..

This kit is a progressive kit so its come on slow and builds up untill the full flow limit....
You can also set it to just come full on at a preset boost range if you not interested in progressive flow
All parameters are user defined also...and are fully adjustable on the fly also.
It will not help on the hill starts tho...i have 2 chips,a bigger turbo...exhaust and water meth all currently running and nothing helps on hillstarts...the yd25 just doesnt make power untill 2000rpm

Water meth injection is definalty worth a read tho

Well for hill starts it all boils down to displacement. As for the Yd25, I think it gives a pretty impressive performance for what it's worth.

Anything you that doesn't harm the engine or blow it up, is a good mod imo. Enjoy!
 
i think the best performance mods would have to be the Exhaust System and the Intake System plus EGR Mod. all safe and won,t damage your engine.

hey guys I own a 2008 d22 I stupidly paid $11,000 with out a RWC,
I took it in for the inspection and it come back with like 37 defects!
everything from sway bar link pins too tierod ends , balljoints , window tint, mirrors, window ra ra ra......
I was quoted $4500 to get everything done, which I did....... it came back and my steering column popped out,
this week a nut had worn off my steering arm , link pins installed upside down! boots not greased....... so I got completely shafted!
bare with me please .....!!!
I still don't have the car in my name yet , and I'm about to put it in for ALL repairs to be done, to make it road worthy at a diesel truck repair place, so I can put it in my name .

I want a proper 4WD! that I can take away and use the bloody thing like I should be able to right!.....
so MY QUESTION IS !!!!

instead of it being looked over again and repaired ......... should I just purchase a power performance upgrade, like this....
