wastegate actuator?

Hi there
Spain built 2011 D40.
I have this broken bit that has been identified as a wastegate actuator by the guys at Navarapart. They also advised that the piece cannot be replaced on its own and would require a replacement turbo. Sounds like crap to me. I have seen (supposedly) compatible devices on the web but not sure about how complex or easy it might be to fit. Any advice?

i'm not up on d40's, but thats facing the wrong way to be a "wastegate". i suspect your model has the electronically controlled turbo, a big black electrical box on the side of the turbo.
i don't have the manual for that year, i would guess its most likely something like an egr cooler bypass valve.

edit: found a pic, its the egr bypass valve on the egr cooler.
 
The 2011 D40 should run a variable vane turbocharger with vacuum control (the electronic widget came in later, and the first year was subject to a recall - 2013 or so?). VV turbos don't use wastegates, as Tweak'e says it's probably the EGR cooler bypass valve.

That may not be important if your EGR has been blocked (I think 2011 still didn't have the flow sensors, these came in 2012 or 2013, I think).

Check the EGR tube (gold tube that runs around the front of the engine). On the vehicle right hand (intake manifold side) you'll find the EGR valve with the gold tube connecting to it - that's the easy (and usual) side to block off the EGR 12mm spanner, undo both bolts and grab the gasket - if there's no hole, your EGR is blocked. Permatex Ultra Blue gasket cement to reinstall.

Checking the exhaust side is harder because the heat in that area tends to make the bolts really difficult to undo. It's worth at least inspecting that area to make sure there's no sooty emissions (from cracks or holes) while you're there. A dentist's mirror and a bright light are a BIG help here.

Of course, some people remove the tube altogether and just block both ends. Yours appears to have had some modifications - that charge air hose does not look standard, and I can't see the baffles.
