Hi everyone,
I’ve been having an issue with my D40 Nissan Navara, and I’m hoping someone here can help. The VDC and Slip lights came on for about a day, then turned off for a couple of days. However, they came back on and haven’t turned off since. Around the same time, I noticed the 4WD system isn’t working—the 4WD light doesn’t come on at all, and the system won’t engage. Scanned it with an OBD scanner and got a U1000 code (CAN communication error) Also getting no signal on the OBD scanner for the steering angle sensor. Tried to use a new steering angle sensor and still no fix. Inspected all the fuses for ABS, VDC, and replaced 4WD fuses. Checked wheel speed sensors and no problems. Any other solutions ?

That could possible be a bad ABS sensor or a bad wheel bearing. I would take a look at your wheel bearings and make sure they are good. A lot of ABS sensor failures are due to the spacing between the sensor and the abs timing ring coming into contact. Easy to check; jack up the wheels and rock...

Bad ABS sensor is my first thought too. Often happens because the wheel bearing starts disintegrating and grease + metal fill the teeth causing an erratic reading that the ECU can't make sense of.

Very easy to check while driving: find a smooth-surfaced bend in the road that you are comfortable taking at around 60km/h. Take this bend in both directions with the windows down and listen carefully. You're trying to hear if there's any difference in "road noise" from one direction to another.

You will hear MORE noise when the damaged wheel loads up more, so if the left bearing is damaged you'll hear it louder when you're in a right hand bend.

And yes, an ABS fault definitely stops the car using 4WD.
