Hi Gents, Ladies,
The only way to get the gear lever out of park, is to hit the Shift Lock button.
Thinking that it might be the brake light switch - but when the ignition is on and the brake pedal is pressed, the brake lights come on!
Any ideas please?

Check carefully - there are TWO brake switches on the auto.
Thanks Tony,
I am aware that the other is for the cruise control.
My query, was that if it were a faulty brake light switch, causing the gear lever to be stuck in P, then should I also expect the brake lights to not work? I'm assuming that the switch either works for both, or neither!
If the brake light switch is then ruled out of the equation, then do I need to dismantle the gear lever and surround, to get to something more local to the lever?
Again - any help/advice appreciated.
Deano

Okay, on the brake switch (that activates the brake lights) there are TWO connections in and two out.

The WHITE wire going in is a power connection and should have 12V at all times, this gets power through a 10A fuse in the passenger compartment.

The RED wire should have power present when the pedal is pressed. This power goes through a diode with a GREEN wire output to the shift lock solenoid (on the side of the shift lever assembly).
