tires screeching around corners

Hello everyone. I do apologize for not introducing myself first, I have been lurking the forums for a few months and have found all the information I need up until now.

I took a drive from Melbourne to Adelaide yesterday and when I got off the highway I noticed my tires are screeching something shocking around low speed corners. It sounds like I'm ripping skids everywhere :confused3:

I checked the tires today and the rears have lost a fair bit of tread and are now down to the wear indicator. I'm hoping I have just enough cash to get a new set before I head back to Melbourne on Wednesday (was hoping to get a couple months out of them still).

My main concern is that it feels like the rear diff is locking up. Ended up driving the last stretch like old granny around corners and if I go slow enough I think I can feel the inside rear tyre dragging like it would with a welded diff. I'm really hoping its just because the tires have bit the dust, I can't afford to have the diff looked at now and I don't have my tools :argh:

So my question is, is it possible that the diff has seized up? The vehicle is an 03 str with 167k on the clock. I'm not sure when the diff oil was changed last and the only tools I brought with me is a socket set.

Thanks in advance for your help.

The rear is an LSD so on full lock the inside will want to spin.

Could've been slipping I couldn't quite tell. Just took it to the shop and it felt fine so I'm really hoping its not the diff. Didn't squeal cause the roads are damp.

Had a service recently?, there has been cases where normal diff oil has been used causing the issues you describe. Or have you had a leak and the oil is very low causing bind up????.

Yeah it was serviced couple months back, there is a dark patch below the drain plug (?) but no dripping. I guess its possible my mechanic used the wrong oil. If I change it will it free up the clutch pack?

Oh and to add, after the service it was only used for local trips and on the farm, not any long drives.

Checked the diff oil, my mechanic has put trans oil in it. Will change it tomorrow and be having a word with him when I get back :shooter:

Thanks John!
