Hi Gang, I am a happy Nissan owner for the past 10 years, having had a Pathfinder & currently an XTrail.
I am looking at the Navara as I intend to attempt some mild off-road stuff as a tourist, expect to travel about 30,000k's pa, and also will be towing a boat or van at +/- 1500kg.
Having only had petrol cars to date, I am led to believe a turbo diesel is a better choice to tow. I will be covering about 20000k's pa towing, the rest around the backroads & town.

How does the new 2.5TD stack up as a towing car, used to be 3litre. Has the reduction in capacity compromised the reliability?
Also, the D22 looks more suitable for rough back roads & tracks.
Appreciate any observations.
Cheers

I had an Xtrail, buying a Navara was a backward step in build quality and reliability for me.
If you do buy a D40, all I can say is auto, auto, auto, auto.

Well mate, your either a metrosexual driver, or
your a 4x4 man.
If its the 4x4 man, the '22 is the one for you.

Anyways:welcome: to the nav forum.

Yep 4 X 4 only, there's no way you would want to drive one to work each day!:sarcastic:

4x4 Thank you. What's work. I have retired & want to play before I die. I like cog swapping & intend to slip a lift kit (2") diff lockers & OME suspension along with bar work from ARB & canopy or buy a used car with all that stuff.
I fish & hunt ferals, & like caving so want a reliable capable car to manage my demands.
Sooo, what do you reckon about the D22 compared to the D40 for a towing & playing car?

If your doing any sort of touring I'd always go the TD D40 auto over the D22 if the dollars allow it. Comfort and not having to change gears all the time makes for a much more relaxing drive. A TD D40 will still go bush in plenty of places (and truth be told probably more places than half those D22 drivers even bother to take they shopping trolleys) so given that you say mild offroad then I wouldn't be worried buying a D40.

Yep, their too tough to be driven to the salon everyday:flowers:

I wish you buggers would get your stories straight. I spent thousands of dollars making this salon mobile and now you tell me I have to drive it to the salon everyday, sheesh if I'd known I was still going to have to drive to work I'd have brought a Getz.

if you're a grey nomad (or sorts) or you just like the idea of putting it in D and pressing the faster button, there is only one choice - D40! but..... (and i personally haven't driven a D40) from what i hear on this forum, The D22 is more capable off road. there is an abundance of after market bits for the D22 but the D40 is getting looked after in this department too nowadays. either way they are both good trucks, and i reckon you will be happy whichever you choose.:cheers!:

I havent driven a D40, but from looks, the D40 is a city sinner, whereas the D22 is more a bush basher if you get my drift. Im pretty happy with the D22 off the road.

Hi PKPK,

I have the D22 09 model 2.5TD Manual and I also tow a boat (about 1.2t) and a Jayco Camper trailer (about 1.6t). We just finished out holiday up north where we covered 10,000km of on and off road driving.

I've done the 3" lift on the Nav and added other stuff as you can see in my Garge.

With or without the DP Chip, the D22 tows well, in fact really well I reckon. Easy to sit on 100km/h fully loaded and trailing. Offroad, I didn't find anything that stopped it with appropriate tyre pressures.

Your main decider would be comfort. The D22 is a great little "work" ute and a pretty tough 4WD but lacks the back seat space of the D40 so if you have big kids, the D40 is a hands down choice. My kids are 2 and 5 so space isn't too bad (I'm 6'3") for me.

I reckon the D22 would easily out do the D40 in off road conditions, but the D40 has more power for towing.

I've had Auto Patrol and my Nav is Manual. I like the stick, especially for towing at speed, Auto is better off the mark, but living in WA where it is mostly flat, things are different here to east coast.

Anyways, I hope this helps.

DJ
