Somewhere between Cave Creek and the sheep bridge is Humbolt Mountain, from the top of this mountain you can see all the other mountains worth seeing around Phoenix on the East side. You can also look down into Horseshoe Reservoir.
We had watched the sun go down up on top of the mountain. We started down the winding road in the darkness when these odd birds started to land directly in our path on the road.
They would stay there until you got about a meter away and they would disappear.
I found out later they were Sonoran Poorwills.
South of Humboldt Mountain, are the Sears-Lay ruins. Not much more then a floor outline as far as to what is left of them. Built on a ridge that allows a view of most of the prominant land marks around Phoenix.
