Hi all. Guess what. I also had the exact same problem with manual mode not working intermittently. After some months not at all actually... (tiptronic not working)
It's now fixed AND I didn't replace the instrument cluster.

I pulled the instrument cluster out and inspected it and pushed on all the components and looked at the soldering. Nothing that I could see as a bad solder joint or blown component using my phone's camera magnification.

I put the cluster back in and the theft light came on briefly before going out. Went for a drive and everything is working perfect again.

I believe the power cycle did a full software reboot and fixed the problem. You need to remember that this is a CAN bus network going to the auto transmission and a digital message is what tells the transmission what it should try to do.

I don't think anyone needs to replace the cluster. Just pull it out press on components if you want to and put it back in after 10mins.

Now I'm wondering if just pulling the battery terminals off for a while would of fixed this???

I am having this same issue. But everything looks fine on the cluster unit to me. Not sure how to test the diodes though and what reading I should be getting?

Pull the cluster out and clean the circuit board with methylated spirits or alcohol. Mine worked again after doing that. (2nd time the tiptronic function stopped after post earlier). Working now but don't know how long it will stay working...

Mine is broken again. Nissan want $2300 for a new instrument cluster. I guess I will try and find a second one from the wreckers.

Hi all, just adding to the thread to say I had the same issue of intermittent operation and then not at all. I tracked down a second hand cluster on gumtree…harder task than I imagined as wreckers had none in brisbane. NIS4x4 wreckers in Victoria wanted $650. I had to Frankenstein bits of the orginal as the clear plastic face was cracked and a push pin brocken, however alls well that ends well. Manual mode is working again, face and pin swapped over. I’ve been given a lead for a workshop at Brendale, North Brisbane that can fix electronic guages, will check them out to see if I can get the Kms reset as I started with a 97k on the clock and now have 204k. Will repost when i know more.

Update everything going fine I put the multi meter on the old cluster and went threw the 61 diodes on the circuit board and found the possible culprit and a dry solder joint might find a replacement diode and re solder the joint and see if it works just for the heck of it
will up date when I do this
cheers Pete
Hi Pete,
Hope the Navara is still chugging along.
Did you end up having a crack at fixing the dry solder in the cluster at all?
Any insight into its location behind the cluster (combination meter)?
Also found this diagram.

update, put second hand cluster in,has fixed the problem, cant believe it ,have spent $2500 in the last 6 months at different shops to rectify problem
Cant thankyou enough for the info you have shared with me.

KMS on the new cluster are half what the original had on it so happy days.

More important for us is the manual mode for when we tow a boat going down bulli pass or ousley. Thankyou once again.
Hi hope can help, when you changed the cluster did the codes on the back match up or can you fit any cluster from any d40 v6 TIA Tony jj

Hi to all well I am back with the same issue on my 2nd cluster they seem to work fine for about 12 months then the issue with DS and manual mode happens again I have been driving in normal mode for 6 months now and I am trying again to get somewhere with this issue I can tell you it’s not the gearbox TCM it’s not a bad solder joint and it’s not the gear selector micro switches
I have narrowed it to a software issue
When I have the problem I stop the vehicle and press the clock button on the left side of the cluster and hold it in and turn ignition on wait a few seconds and goes into test mode let it perform the test and push and hold same button in and seems to work for a while but then goes back to not working again anyone else found a proper fix for this issue it’s driving me insane and Nissan could not run a brothel in a **** storm they make the cars and don’t even know how they work so if you are having this issue don’t bother with a Nissan dealer ship
Anyway had my rant
The kindest regards Pete

just a update today i removed the cluster on my 2011 550 and gave the circuit board clean and checked the wirig again i had the unit removed for 30 minutes or so and gave the pins on the connectors a good clean as well plugged it all back in and turned ignition on and it worked put the dash back together and tried again worked a couple of times then stopped again the cluster had reset but somthing is happening with the signal from the cluster to the Tcm when i was cleaning the board i reinspected the solder joints and components but could not see anything the vehicle it self runs brilliantly its really the only issue i am having but a annoying one as when travelling up steep hills it hunts for gears i am at a total loss of what is going on as i mentioned this is my third cluster that has gone bad and another one is out of the question as secondhand they are $600 plus now any help or direction would be greatly appreciated
kind regards pete

If it's the third cluster I'm thinking eliminate cabling/ connectors intermittent first. Maybe a connector pin not mating correctly. Is it possible it's heat related if it takes a while to occur? I've not seen the circuit board but is it worth resoldering all of the connections on board in the cluster in case it is a dry joint.just a few ideas. Where are you located

Thank you for the advice and reply Iank84 I think I will go down that avenue I will have to find a very small tipped soldering iron there are quite a few joints I live in Helensburgh NSW so in summer it does cop a fair bit of heat
Also Old Tony mentioned the radio shares a earth earlier in this thread I installed a after market radio before this started to happen I still have the original radio I might also reinstall that before hand thanks again for your help and suggestion
Kind regards Pete

Well the common earth with the radio should be easy to check its in good nick, can also measure it if you can get your hands on an accurate low ohms range multimeter. Pity you arent down in cold melbourne or I could go over all the soldering for you. It doesn't take much of a dry joint to upset electronics. Who ever has a go at it make sure the solder gets enough heat quickly to ensure the solder runs correctly. Lets know how you get on. regards

thanks again for your reply and offer unfortunately I am 900 odd ks from you lol i mucked around a bit more today and found if i turn the ignition off whilst in sports shift meaning gear lever to the far right and turn ignition back on the S appears and sometimes lets me select 1st gear but when it shift back to D and back again to Ds it drops out not all the time when it lets me select 1st gear I can go back and forth and it works and i go to neutral and start the vehicle shift back down to drive then over to Ds it works until i shut the car off and restart it then it doesn't go threw the same steps by turning ignition on the the gear lever in DS position and I get the DS again itr really strange its doing this I checked the wires on the selector and cleaned the connectors and had a look at the micro switches but nothing I could see that could cause a issue not sure now if the CAN signal is getting interrupted between the selector to the cluster or the cluster to the TCM doing my head in like I mentioned before maybe the Radio earth position causing the issue might have to try putting the original radio back in just to check that off the list before re soldering
I am sure other people have had this issue I do remember reading other threads on this a far while ago
thanks again Iank84 for your assistance
kind regards Pete
