Gday guys and gals. I looking to buy a D22 dualcab tray and have found the site awesome with buying tips, etc.
I'm looking for a '03 - '06 DC 3.0 diesel.
Query I have is regarding reco of the factory Hitachi turbo.
Seems to need rebuilt/replacement at around the 150,00 km mark.

Just wondering if you can buy a separate reco kit (bearings, shaft and wheel, etc) or is it cheaper just to buy a new replacement?

My plan was to do the turbo when I buy it then add a catch can, turbo timer, EGT guage, etc.

Hey,

My Nav has done 220 000 km and never had the turbo rebuilt or a new one and still runs 15 pound of boost.

Gday mate, Just buy a cartridge so its a complete unit that can be fitted into you snail housing.

Oh and i got over 370'000km out of mine with out touching a single thing, turbo or otherwise.

Welcome to the forum.

Turbocharger longevity is directly related to the level of care that the vehicle owner has. Look in my sig - there's a FAQ on turbochargers (I did that FAQ first because I thought it very important, and haven't had a lot of time to do much with a LOT of others recently).

Basically if you shut your engine down when the turbo is really hot you can kill a turbo in a few thousand km. The turbo is powered by hot exhaust right at the outlet of the manifold, of course - so it cops the absolute worst in temps. Inside the turbo are bearings that oil is pumped through. Stop the engine, the oil stops flowing and it just cooks in the bearing - forming hard deposits that will very quickly destroy the bearings and milliseconds later, the turbocharger compressor and a fraction of a second after that, your engine.

Thanks for the replys.

I guess it's always the horror stories that stick in your mind the most. The reality is it's probably less than 10% of trucks that have a problem with the turbo prematurely.

Thanks for the links Old.Tony. Awesome info. Much appreciated.

The Nav i'm looking at is an '04 with 200K on it. The turbo wheel is still nice and tight and doesn't have any evidence of oil blow-back.

Having a proper look tomorrow then hopefully it'll be sitting in my driveway by the weekend.

PS. Still have the 4.2 turbo Mav to sell if anyone interested (classifieds).
