Hey guys my holden ute was recently written off by some idiot.. and I'm in the market to buy a 2nd hand navara d40 2007 or later. I was hoping that some one could help me out with what to look out for with the navara d40 petrol or dieselq I am still undecided . Thanks!

Welcome to the forums.

You'll find your questions answered in detail in many threads on this forum but for a quick and easy answer.

What out for the clutch in the 07's or get an auto if you want to tow with it. Petrol or diesel is entirely up to you, diesel should offer more power and better economy but petrol's are still a preference for some people. At the end of the day most answers will be personal choice and only you can make the decision based on what you want to do with it.

Petrols pull harder and are quicker off the mark, but wont go anywhere near as far from a tank of fuel. The petrol model will cost you less in the short term, but potentially more in the end, unless the fuel prices stay the way they are and diesel remains more expensive.

Think around 550kms from a petrol and around 750kms from a diesel (average). - im sure everyone will have a go at me for saying this. Some people get more, some people get less.

Thanks guys. It's just that I've heard a lot of people have problems with the turbo diesel..

I wouldnt want a petrol engine but thats my preference. Turbo diesel is where the reliability is.

If you read enough internet theories you'll find everything breaks, everything has problems and no manufacturer has a completely clean record and that covers every item in the world. What wont be so clear is whether the complainants actually own said item they are complaining about or just spreading more crap because they don't own the said item.

I have a 07 turbo diesel, got it second hand with 70 000km, have had no problems with mine. I love it. I use it for work as a daily drive and going 4wding, does all I ask of it

The petrol/diesel decision will depend on what you want to do with the car. You could fit a snorkel to a petrol car but dunking it in a creek/river will probably stop it, whereas the diesels can wade through water that reaches halfway up the windscreen. I've been through a mountain river that was sloshing over the bonnet as we went through - no dramas.

The diesels DO make more noise and are dearer to service but use less fuel to do nearly the same work. Diesels will tow better for longer and for towing you really should look at an auto - the manual's clutch isn't up to it.

Either car will do dry off-road work but there are places in the outback that don't have unleaded. Either car can be fitted with a long range fuel tank.

It may just come down to personal preference. My Navara, purchased new in late 2009, is my first diesel. It's wearing nearly 92,000km now and I wouldn't go back to petrol for quids - but that's my personal feeling. You might not like the noise. You might hate the smell of diesel. You might like the extra zip that the petrol engine has - the D40 turbo does have some off-the-mark lag.

Okay so so far I've driven an auto and manual petrol navara for a test drive. Both great to drive one's petrol guage didn't work and both had minor dents and scratches.. next is the turbo diesel .

Hey guys I'm going to test drive an 07 turbo diesel in the morning is there anything I should look out for?? Thanks :)

Check for the recall stickers, they should be in the service book or on the door pillar. I think for the 07 it's one for the rims and maybe one for the bonnet strap (both are searchable on this forum and have dedicated threads). You could also check the government recalls website for your model just to confirm which recalls effected that model.

It's rims and bonnet catch for the '07, rear axles was the '06.

There's little to watch out for apart from the obvious. It should lag a little on take-off, that's a D40, but with the accelerator depressed 3/4-full it should be very smart once the RPM reaches about 1500 or so.
