Hi all, first time poster, I'm recently new to owning a 2007 Nissan navara d40 diesel having problems with it blowing black smoke on acceleration, very sluggish acceleration until about 2000 rpm then boost kicks in blows heaps of black smoke when this happens. Recently had a new head, timing chain and harmonic balance replaced. Was running great up until my timing chain slipped and damaged my head, hence the reason for head replacement. Mechanic can't seem to find answers. Please help

It's not in new condition, however it was fine up until I had the timing chain and head replaced. I do have a new turbo on order

I had a flat spot on acceleration when the fuel primer bulb perished, although not lots of black smoke. Once it got on boost ran perfectly normally.

Then vacuum hoses split causing reduced boat and lots of black smoke.

Given it’s a similar age (also 2007) it could be a perishes rubber hose or similar. Also possible the mechanic I can missed a hose somewhere and didn’t install. I managed to knock one off at one point which killed boost but otherwise ran smoothly (just a lot slower)

Ok thanks for the info, I'll check the rubber hoses and replace them just to be sure, the mechanic replaced the primer bulb when he replaced the head as he said it was leaking.

I'm hoping it is something simple like a split or missing vacuum hose. I have checked the main 3 so far. Is there other ones I should be looking for? (The 3 that come off the turbo control valve)

It's cost me a fortune so far lol. It has been suggested that the timing chain has been put on 1 tooth wrong, but seems to be idling perfect and running well when boost cuts in.

If the turbo eventually kicks in then it's unlikely that it's at fault? More likely that the boost solenoid is sticking?

Try bypassing the boost solenoid by running the vacuum hose directly to the turbo (rather than via the solenoid) then go for a drive.

Also worth checking that the vac hoses are connected to the right places on the solenoid (ie your mechanic hasn't accidentally swapped a couple around)

Hi am having very similar problems with my 2006, after I built a new engine, I have checked my Cam Chain and it lines up with the fuel pump spot on, but its a bit more difficult to see the crank chain timing marks. Could this cause this hesitation, & I also have surging under mild Acceleration?

The other thing I'm looking at is there is an air bubble in the fuel line, just after the primer, on mine Could yours have something similar?

Thanks Pat, when I first took it back to the mechanic, he said he replaced the solenoid just in case it was playing up.

The vac hoses as far as i can find online are going to the right places. I will double check that tho.

Also with bypassing the solenoid, how would I do this? The hose that comes from the turbo where do I connect it to? Thanks Chris

@ Cozmic191, when cold, if you get a mate to rev the engine to about 2000rpm, can you hear a hissing sound near the turbo that goes away, once you rev it a bit more/ or once the boost comes on?
Hi i Kzin, if I do hear a hissing sound what would this indicate? Could this indicate that I have an air bubble? I'll have a look to see if I can find an air bubble like yours.

I'm taking mine back to the mechanic tomorrow. Hoping he may find something (altho he had it for 3 days last week) I'm beginning to think it may be bottom timing chain. Altho it idles perfect and cruises along highway nicely if he finds anything other than what you have mentioned I will keep you posted

Would the bubble cause the symptoms I am showing? The pressure in the fuel rail is correct.

The symptom I have is lots of clatter from the injectors on acceleration, this went away once I got rid of most of the air (the air seems to come back though).

I still have the similar hesitation issue though, I tried bypassing the solenoid, as PAT said but it made it as though there was not much boost.

In the attached picture I removed the pipe on the solenoid closest to the red arrow, & attached it to the turbo at the other red arrow.

Possible boost/exhaust leak...

Any hiss would be a different issue to the bubble' if you have one.

Has anyone ever heard of the timing being out by 1 tooth, but the vehicle still runs fine?

yes happened to me on a grooved belt jumped one tooth i dont think vehicle would go far at all it would stall, so if yours can get up to speed ,its not the timming chain

Update on my Navara, when my mechanic replaced my timing gear and head, etc. He fitted a blanking plate to replace my egr as apparently mine was broken. When I took it to him today (before fitting my new turbo) he sent it to a diesel specialist.

The specialist did something called a "smoke test" on it. What they found was the blanking plate for the egr valve was not working sufficiently, which was allowing smoke back into the chamber it was throwing off the mixture and the turbo was unable to keep up until the revs picked up.

Tomorrow he is fitting a new egr valve (genuine for around $900 aarrgghh) apparently this will fix my issue. I will keep you updated on the outcome. Fingers crossed.
