Well, after trying to fit the Ryco Z9 filter (which does not fit due to its height and top profile) I found another supplier and to my surprise the filter shape and height was different enough that it fitted under the common rail.

here are the 3 filters Ryco Z9, Cooper Z9 and Z89a ( direct replacement for the OE )...I bought both the Ryco and Cooper filters from AutoBarn..the Z9 Cooper cost $5.99 whilst the Ryco was $7.99 last week..

you'll need to remove the bolt that secures the pipework

and just loosen this bolt so the entire component can be pivoted up a little

and they are both made in China

I found with my engine that there are 3 different size of the same filter. Just the lengths were different. Obviously the bigger filter will filter for longer but as it is a diesel and I change the oil and filter every 5000km it is of no real hindrance to run the mid sized filter.

Good find and pictures Gazza. I know a few people have been looking for filters to fit their YD25

It will be good to see if it all works Ok. Better than paying $40 odd to get a genuine filter.
Might pay to cut both filters (Nissan and Z9) in half to see if the insides are the same.

Could you let us know what specifically do you mean pls?

Sorry. there has been talk of the genuine MANN filter having a anti drain valve internally. that said, if a filter does not have one and in this case the filter is mounted upside down the filter will drain it's oil and likely associated oil galleries when the engine is shut down. So, on startup the oil pump has to fill the filter and galleries prior to oil pressure build up.

Apparently the Z89a has an anti drain valve in the other end? or not at all? Unsure but the oil light supposedly stays on longer on cold starts than the MANN filter. The Z89A has many applications such as Volvo 4cyl and in this case the filter is not mounted upside down.

Regards
Greg

It may drain out but there will still be a thin film of oil on most components which will offer enough protection, unless you like starting your car with your foot flat to the floor. I wouldn't worry about it

A thin film offers virtually no protection. The hydrodynamic wedge for bearings requires pressure quickly and of most concern is the oil pressure fed timing chain tensioners. Particularly seeing as the yd25 has a history of chain problems.

Certainly, if the Z9 type can hold oil, then that is no drama. My last car was an 80 series Land Cruiser that ran a Z9. I used the smaller Z418 that Toyota specified from 96 on (even though the same 4.5 petrol was used since 92) and with the smaller filter, oil pressure built up much quicker.

The Z9 filter is mounted upside down in Ford engines (thread at top) compared with the way the Nissan filter is (thread on bottom) so the valve might come into play.

The oil light stays on for approx 1 or 1.5 secs---not sure how long my reflexes are when I hit the stop watch though....just an observation I'd say a second.

can anyone else measure there's pls ?..it would be worthwhile so as to put this subject to bed .

That sounds like the filter holds oil. I will start mine on the Weekend, mine goes out pretty much immediatly from memory.

Will advise.

I checked the Ryco z9 , z89a and also the Cooper equiv oil filters--they all have anti drain back "valves".....its easily checked visually.

i recon 1-1.5 seconds is very close to immediatly, i have used z89 since new 100000 ks now serviced on time all the time no problems.

Started mine yesterday. Prob under 1 second from start. But as long as pressure buils quickly, should be ok.

Will prob go to a Z89A after the warranty expires.

I am yet to understand the advantage of using a Z9 over a Z89A.. Can someone shed some light in this for me?

Went into Supercheap yesterday and bought a Supercheap branded z9 equiv

I lined them up and for all intentional purposes I could not tell the difference between a Cooper and a SC..he size , the drawing design, the shape of the anti drain back..needless to say..it will fit.
