I'd been looking at buying an awning to attach to the roof racks of my D40 for a while but after finding out the prices for one I was more inclined to make one my self.
It needed to be something that could easily be attached or removed when not needed and also easy to set up.
I bought a 6' x 8 ' PVC tarp (1.8m x 2.4m) off ebay for $70. I found some 25mm SHS steel sitting in the shed and cut it to 1.8m long. I then went to the local hardware store to buy the required bolts to attached the tarp to the SHS and the SHS to the roof racks. I also went to the camping store to buy 2 height adjustable awning poles.
All up it cost me approx $100, it may not look as pretty as one of the arb ones but it certainly does the job. One of the benefits is that it it's easy to attached another tarp on the end of this one to make it bigger. The poles roll up with the tarp and I used occy straps to hold it together once it's rolled up.
