Another have D40 owner here, after not owning a 4x4 for a few years due to having a company car etc.... the missus and I decided to get rid of her Toyota Echo and replace it with a 4x4. I have previously owned a SWB Landcruiser (Bundera) and TJ Wrangler with all the fruit. Intially when I started looking I totally wrote the D40 off my list due to the bad press etc...but after doing some more research and test driving one (2011 STX with all the fruit) I fell in love again 
the D40 ticked a lot more boxes than the rest. I also can't believe how much bloody power this thing has....leaves my mates Hilux's/Dmax's behind! So in answer to the OP yes you purchased the right Navara..IMHO ofcourse
