I guess I'll take the gamble with the diff at least it's under warranty at the moment.

Be definitely going the 33's after reading all this, bit of extra petrol and loss of power was expected at least I know it's not to the extent that I've had some people make out to me.

I think if the front diff shows signs of wear I'll make it break and get replaced just before warranty is over lol

its a good theory but both of mine just went BANG with no warning, part of the problem is that the front diff has a full alloy housing, not even the centre is steel like other IFS cars which causes them to crack like egg shells and tearing the guts of the diff apart in the process.
Not trying to scare you, just letting you know all the facts.

If you do a search for a thread "oops i broke it" and oops i broke it again written by "Woody" you will see pics of his front diff with a massive crack all the way through the middle of the housing and he did it twice as well.
Mine however broke in two different places again, so you really cant say its one part in particular.

There's a few factors that could play a part in busting a D40 front diff. First, the obvious, tackling a track in 4H or 4L, one wheel bounces up in the air whilst the other three have traction whilst giving it throttle, then that wheel touches ground, grabs grip, shoots the "power" back into the front diff and bang, salada.

Secondly, D40's arent built with solid offroading in mind, they are aimed at tradesman and bitumen driving, the front diffs arent that strong from the get go. I've been offroad alot in semi rough stuff in 4H on 33's and my front diff is fine. But i do more touring / mud than solid offroad stuff up steep climbs etc.

Definitely won't be doing anything too serious off-road or would of bought a different car, I tow a trailer for work and not planning to go to hardcore with it.

Just more touring stuff also and nothing to extreme, therefore I'm hoping I shouldn't have an issue.

I have just fitted 285/70/17 mud tyres to my 2013 d40. The main difference in power is i cant drive it as lazily as i used to, like staying in 4th through slow round abouts etc. Highway and getting up to speed is not affected much at all. I checked mine with gps as well and the speedo is now within 1km/h at 100km/h.

Is there much evidence that a locked front diff will help with the diff strength? I dont really do enough hard 4wding to warrant an arb/ harrop e locker but i am interested in the lokka automatic ones.

Well you should be right for just touring stuff then.

Not sure but i would personally get a V6 Navara front diff, have it rebuilt with a locker in it and put that in. The V6 diffs are alot stronger.

Good to hear batco
Driving slightly different was expected I guess but getting up to speed and take off was my main concern wich I'm happy to hear again.

What lift do you have on to fit them?

Do you have the stock bumper on?

Just curious cause was looking at mine this morning and the clearance with the "2" suspension lift only, although will be putting a "1" body lift.

Just looked like would be a little close to rubbing on front bumper so was seeing if everyone has bull bars on already allowing more clearance?

I had them on before the bullbar. You have to mod the inner wheel guard with a heat gun and gently massage the plastic outwards for a bit more room. That was also before i did the body lift too and just had 2" suspension lift.

Ok thanks! Have seen the thread on modding the inner guards also witch seems fairly easy, I'll just mod whatever is needed to get them to fit regardless 😄

Fair enough but don't forget larger diameter tyres will compromise braking performance, which is something to consider, particularly towing a trailer.

I only have a 2 inch body lift at present I had scrubbing on the drivers inner guard so I have heated and moved that and I get touching on the passenger chassis rail on full lock. It's nothing major though. I will be fitting a 3 inch front and 2 inch rear suspension lift in the coming weeks. Current fuel consumption has gone from an average 9.7 too 11. Pretty good considering 8% of that is due to extra distance covered in the tyres. So only really adds .6-1l/kmh would be less for all highway

I have heard that said before, BUT it is what i was talking about in my earlier post in this thread about the 4pins assembly as apposed to the older 2pin, as far as i have been told from a few spanner men they are actually the same diff in all the new models of Spain built D40 so that includes the 4cyl ST
