I have a 2010 d40 and there is a quite loud fan noise around the passenger side when accelerating above 2k revs

Wondering if it’s the the turbo (just due to the fact it’s consistently kicking in under acceleration) or if it’s the viscous oil in the fan

Fan spins freely when engine is off and takes a couple seconds to stop spinning when engine is turned off

Thanks in advance

Definitely sounds like the viscous hub isn't working right.

Now here's the part I do NOT like.

You have two choices:

1) Purchase a new/reco viscous hub, possibly $200+, remove your hub, install new one.

2) Visit a Toyota dealership (a large one, not a rinky-dink Toyota/Milk Bar/Agquip/Post Office) and purchase ONE bottle of "viscous hub silicone oil" (last time I bought one it was $18 - a fe years ago). Remove your hub, open it on flat surface, pour oil in, reassemble without moving the base, then reinstall.

Take care with the back of the radiator as you're removing the fan first, then the hub (they don't like coming out together, or didn't on mine).
