D22 ZD30 Handling in wet Weather conditions....

to continue on the highjacked theme, I tried to sit in a great wall, couldnt get my foot on or off the clutch and everytime I put my foot on the gas it pushed on the brake too, and thats with only size 11 feet. guess its ok if u fit.

On the original topic, I think there are 2 things that have affected my tyre spin. 1 is the rubber compound, I know that from my old car so thats a certain factor. the other is the power surge that comes when the turbo kicks in, took me a month or so to adjust my driving and back off slightly jus after reaching 2000rpm and that fixed the problem. I did the EGR mod today and noticed the power is a lot smoother now, will see if it still wants to spin as much
 
Talking about hijacking the thread, but in a slightly different direction, and at the risk of committing navara forum suicide, i nearly cracked a fat looking at the ford rangers online the other day,
3.2l 5cyl, 470nm from 1500-2500rpm and if you squint hard enough they look like a d22 except bigger! (but not as pretty)
I reckon you'd know about it if you had shit tyres on one of those!
 
When my ute had Cooper ATR's on it, traction in the wet was shit house. Third gear fishies weren't an issue. Since going to BFG AT's, not a chance in hell. Not even in first gear!

I think it just comes down to tyres..
 
pouring rain tonight on tram tracks i was sliding my back end out in 3rd gear! (stock tyres are * )
 
nothing like second gear, round the round about then skate up the street!!! miss my commodore days :(

this is a work ute..tractor some might say.
The tyres arent for wet weather road handling,
its a ute so light on the rear and on the wet bitumen real easy to wheelspin with all its low/mid range torque.
Get used to it...drive to the conditions and the trucks capabilities and known hazards.
If one needs a great handling vehicle for wet weather bitumen driving, I suggest looking at a fair dinkum road car.
 
I engage front hubs wet roads, and drive in 4wd in heavy rain.
Always towing a trailer, I find this helps stay in control.
 
Love it because it's just common sense...the standard of which is dropping severely.

Get used to it...drive to the conditions and the trucks capabilities and known hazards.
If one needs a great handling vehicle for wet weather bitumen driving, I suggest looking at a fair dinkum road car.

your going to be needing a new transfer chain sometime soon then.

having the hubs locked is a good precaution in case you need 4x4 to get up a slippery hill. but using 4x4 on the road, even in the rain, will cause transmission wind up.
 
Muds tyres are the best fix for wet roads, the wider spacing in the groves helps in the wet
 
the lack of contact area with muds makes them a whole lot worse.
my road tread tires handle the wet tarseal far better than my muds.
 
Ive found it the other way around, having more contact area with smaller gaps creates pockets in the grooves making it spin more, but when you have wider grooves with the muddies it uses the sides of the lugs to grip. I have to really feed it to it to try get it to spin

where talking tarseal here right ?
sides of lugs do not anything when on tarseal.
most decent tarseal tires have enough grooves to pump surface water off. in deep water big lugs can help pump large amounts of water where as small grooves will cause aquaplaning if your silly enough to be driving fast.

theres no way less traction aera is going to outdo a tire with more traction area. unless the rubber compound is vastly different. ie a soft 4x4 could outdo a hard tarseal tire but the trade off is tire wear.
 
I found my bfg muddies downright dangerous compared to other tyres iv had on wet roads. Would lock up under brakes ridiculously easy under brakes in the wet. Power oversteer wasnt ever a real problem because i drive gently in the nav to save fuel and tyres.

Our previous d21 & d22 were driven the same way, both didn't have any issues from it. The d21 traveled over 200k.

later D22 transfer chain is a bit weaker the early ones.
 
And whats the problem with 3rd gear fishies??? lol.... if your still spinning tyres in 3rd then your not exactlty driving to the conditions. I use to have bfg A/T's and found them to be very predictable and easy to control when the back was right out but my new maxxis buckshots have more grip and are harder to get it to slide, but when it does get sideway it seems alot harder to hold the slide and control it.
