Hey fellas,
Was at the local arb dealer today gettin my canopy window fixed (hooray!) and we had a chat about tyres.
He said another option instead of going a bigger aspect and having the disadvantages (265 75 16) could be to go to a 245 70 16.
He said the main benefitof these is that they're a truck tyre size so you can get 10 plys, way stronger than my current bfg at's apparently, he was talking coopers.
Has anyone got or heard of people doing this?
Man I'm gettin confused!
Cheers.

Probably means 245/75R16. They are the same diamater as the 265/70R16 that are standard just 20mm narrower. I am running Cooper STT 245/75R16's and am happy with them. The 245/75R16 is a truck tyre size while 265/70R16 is typically a passanger tyre construction size so they will be a stronger tyre, this is why I went with this size as I didn't want to go to a larger diamater. Tyre manufactures recomend 245's on a 7" rim and 265's on an 8" rim so you can deflate a 245 further wiithout risking popping the bead off the rim.

The "245" is the tyre width in mm the "75R" is the ratio of the tyre wall to the width i.e 75% and the "16" is the rim size in inches.

Cheers

Hi Peter,
Yep that sounds right. What you've just said is what I was trying to say I think?
Certainly sounds like considering, think I was lookin at the Cooper St which is the 60 road 40 off road?
How do they look being skinnier? Sounds like there's s few arguments for and against going slimmer over different terrains as well. You happy with yours?
Cheers.

I have just stuck with the standard size for everyday driving.

The Cooper ST's are a great tyre.

Dave.

You do notice that they are narrower when you look at it but I went 245/75R16 as a compromise as I wasn't ready to do the mods to make larger diamater tyres work properly and wanted a tougher light truck tyre construction and I wanted performance over looks. A lot of people will go straight to larger tyres but make there vehicle less capable by doing this especially with a vehicle like the Navara which lacks power, has tall gearing and weak stearing. I do plan to go to 285/75R16's on 8" rims for my next set of tyres but plan to have 3" exhaust, chip, crawler gears and stearing upgrade before going to bigger tyres plus I already have 2" suspension and 2" body lift to make them fit. Bigger tyres are better off road but with some vehicles such as the Navara you need to do a few mods to get them to work to their best.

Cheers

That sounds like a fairly well structured opinion to me mate, sounds like you've got an impressive setup. Heard another opinion today that the 10 plys can also make the ride harder (not ideal until on standard suspension!!) due to the stiffness of the tyre wall.
For example we run 2 plys on machines at work to go over golf greens coz they're nice n soft and don't leave much of an
impression.
I'm certainly leaning tissues 245's though, I like the thinking behind using them, it makes sense!
Cheers again for the info
Anyone arguing against this......

Hey Guys

I am in the market for new tyres and are looking at the Cooper St Maxx 245/75R16. I've been looking on the forum and internet for arguements for and against thinner tyres. I found this article http://www.outbackcrossing.com.au/FourWheelDrive/Truth_About_4WD_Tyres.shtml which puts forward a strong article for thin tyres. Just looking for peoples opinions on wider tyres.

I think i have settled going with the thinner tyres due to the fact that I live in QLD and have restrictions on the size i can increase them by and also not having the mods to be able to handle the larger tyres. Just wanting to get the other side of the story for possible future mods

Cheers

I'm not convinced wide tyres are the go, so 235/85r16 is probably what will go on next, when you lower tyre pressures for off road use it's the growth in footprint length that gives the traction (from the diameter) not the width so much. I think wide tyres just increase stress on the vehicle components. I have even looked at 7.50r16's (Dunlop Super Gripper) as a possibility, typical of what was found on split rims, older Cruisers, Patrols and Land rovers etc.
