If it's an issue in the D22 then you guys aren't saying much about it!

As far as I know it's a D40 problem. Similar engine, but pushed 30% harder from factory.

It's a very good question, though. Any D22 owners care to elaborate on the kind of chain used in their engines? How about those that have chipped/modded theirs to produce similar or more power than the D40?

My understanding of the cause of the problem is that it's not really a chain issue, but a tensioner issue. Once the tensioner starts stuffing up, the chain suffers and eventually fails.

Timing Chain

at 190,000km service i asked my mechanic if we should change the timing chain, his reply was if its not rattling dont touch it and beside a new one will cost around $3k. at 207,000km i had just come down the Eaton range in qld, and as i got to the bottom and applied a little revs she went bang and bent 2 valve rods, motor and transmission is now out of the car, and deciding between a reco warranty motor from yd25.com for $8,800 or a swap for around $4,000, mechanic has quoted me $3,300 to finish the job, so somewhere between $8-$12k........Good onya Nissan

Saw a duramax in a d40..any conversion is simple unless you have a 4x4..sorta depend on what adapters you can buy.

We don't really hear very many other complaints about the YD25, it's a powerful, torquey and fuel efficient engine.

It seems that once you have done the dual row timing chain upgrade on a late model engine, you would have a reasonably bullet proof engine.

There is a recent thread about an uninsured member putting a tree through a late model D40, I would definitely be talking to him about taking what's left of the engine!

do they squeal or just rattle on start up ? I'm hoping mine is the alternator pulley as it squeals til its hot then just in a flash goes away after it sounds like its going to take off

Alternator id reckon...seen heaps of "whats this noise" videos with a yd25 squealing...
Mine is a rattle on very cold startup....interesting thing i learnt the other day..a few people that have recently fitted ryco oil filters have soon noticed a cold start rattle (top chain tensioner) one guy removed the ryco..fitted a genuine nissan and lost the rattle..30tho kms later he still has no rattle.

^^ that's true. The genuine oil filters build oil pressure heaps faster. I use the MAN Hufman filters as they make the genuine ones for nissan and they are cheaper.

I didnt take notice of the filter that came out but i was fitted by our truck guy..dont think it was a nissan one.never had a problem before i fitted the ryco..

I guess if the anti-drainback valve in the Nissan filter is designed to work properly with the filter 'upside down' then it holds oil in the galleries that go to the tensioners better.

That means that the oil pressure on the tensioners will come up quicker with a Nissan filter than aftermarket one. Since there is already oil in the 'pipe'

Not sure if there is any truth to the stories, but since the original filter is not super expensive, I intend to just keep buying the Nissan part.

Good info, b nice to back up with real data via a loga..in and out oils pressures but bit of a mission to. on the race ski motors I build I always run intake oil pressure/temp,water pressure/temp, intake air temp , afr in manifold just before turbo or SC then corispond that with egt temps on each cylinder and let Motec do the rest
