Hi all!
I am a complete newbie to this site, and 4wd in general, and I'm after a bit of advice.
After months of searching for a solid 4x4 Ute, I am seriously considering a d22, between 04-06, around 150k on the clock. Main reason is these fall into my price range.
I have read on different forums that these are good motors, which can also suffer from expensive things going wrong! And that a few mods will help keep the car in good health for its life under my care. (ie catch cans?? Breathers?? I don't know??)
Can anyone point out what I:
Definitely should have on it,
Definitely should put on it if it doesn't have it,
What things I should look out for when buying one to make sure it won't (or at least reduce the risk of) crap out on me and spend the next six months in the garage while I save up to buy the replacement thing that crapped out.
I will mainly be using it for work, so be able to carry my tools to and from the city and suburbs, with occasional rough roads, and once a month or so, off camping to off road terrains, fishing etc and be good to carry my famine around in.
I know that I wont one with uprated suspension/tyres, bull bar, tow pack and possibly a canopy, after that ill se how I go.
I know that this may be a topic covered many times over, but if anyone could lend their patience and wisdom, it would be very much appreciated!
Look forward to your comments/ advice.

Cheers

first things would be a turbo timer and a intercooler to catch the bits of the turbo if i blows up

If you find one with all the fruit in your price range you would be lucky. Catch cans, intercooler, exhaust, egr mod(maybe but not necessary, you can do this yourself). There are a lot of d22 around for good prices and have a lot of the gear already on it. Just look at for leaks and all the usual signs of damage. I would spend some money on underbody protection to protect vital parts.

It'll be the 3.0l for sure.
What are these catch cans, breathers and egr mods I keep reading about? Anyone got a rough price on how much these would be to buy/fit?
Thanks

first thing i did when i got my 3L d22 put in a catch can, i think $30 from supercheap auto took me about 20mins to install, next was EGR took me about 20 mins it's a simple DIY both of them, just take your time dont rush if your not sure ask!

3.0L nav for sure because there's no replacement for displacement ;)

Having owned both the 2.5 is actually a fair bit faster and is faster in gear, especially in 5th going from 80kmh up.

in saying that the 3.0L pulls off easier and is less affected by heavy loads, less likely to die from bad fuel and probably a bit easier to fix if the shit hits the fan.

plus to the OP the ZD30 in navaras doesn't suffer the grenade issue, thats to do with the patrols VNT turbo and ECU, both of which are not in the D22.

where are you located, Im thinking of selling my 06 D22 to get something with a V6, its pretty much stock though (68000km on it)

Hey 180, I'm in Melbourne. I do fancy the 3l over the 2.5...easy to fix is good as once I've bought the car, ill be broke! But I am looking to get as much on the car as possible, although my budget at the very max is 20k, there are one or two out there with a few things on, looking at them them though, with suspension/tyre setups they are either older (03) or more ks on the clock than I'd like, 180, 190 etc.
I would prefer an 06, with less ks on the the clock (yeah I know I'm picky, and greedy! But this cars gotta last me at least 5-10 years.

Thank you very much for your help guys, it is very much appreciated, and thanks for letting me know if one pops up!

dam I am in QLD, was going to say come around and have a look if you were close but I also know mine is worth about $23-24k

Seen low km 06 ones for anything up to $28k at a dealer :/

Haha, thanks 180, all of those are on ny short list!!

Although I didn't really want a white one, it seems they are the ones with most if the stuff on, and lower kays.

Are these easliy fixed by general mechanics if things go wrong/ or if need help putting a mod on? Or would I have to take it to a specialist? I have noooo idea about the workings of a car!

Thanks

I think they outsold hiluxs for a while back in early 2000 so you will find between these and patrols every mechanic should have worked on the ZD30, theres nothing fancy in these trucks just solid Jap engineering.

the only 2 major things I know of that go wrong is the fuel pump kicking the bucket ($4-5000 bill for a new one) and the turbo letting go, both are completely random though and many people are getting around with almost 300000km on their trucks and never had to replace anything like that.

well, thats not to bad, if the turbo blows up it could be 10-12k bill for a new motor, hence the intercooler suggestion but this can happen to any car.

Its just the game you play when buying an older car.

Well I shall be looking in to taking all precautions and keep my fingers crossed... Turbo timer, egr, catch can, although I have no idea where they go or how to fit them! Haha... my mechanic is gonna love me!

Just be aware that the trading post one is a DX, so is not as well equipped as the St-R. Hence it's cheaper.
