Might be worth a phone call to some employment agencies in Gladstone if your happy enough to travel. There is an insane amount of work going on up there if you are happy enough to travel. Pretty good coin too from all reports.

joshman

like scottar stated have a look at gladstone as they will be ramping up early next year for the gas project. another company to look at it Downer. They have various locations around aust. if your looking for a casual shutdown thing try the downer office in wa. i am doing this as a stopgap until i finish my instro course. they fly in/out to hedland and we have a few eastern staters coming over and they are flown over. but only get paid to fly from perth to hedland. the work is not overly exciting but like i said its a stopgap until something comes along. on average the work is for anywhere from 2-5 days a week and have work most weeks. if you want any more info feel free to pm me

Joshman, your already in QLD, they are looking for tradies up there just as much as WA, my mates brothers are superintendents in mines up there and there are screaming for people.
I'm a plant mechanic in the mines in the hunter valley and there's a shortage in people here too.

Ok, so there's another chapter in this saga. I was only out of work for a week and a half, and have been working with a company doing maintenance at amberley RAAF base.

And just got the arse this morning...

The job hunt continues!

Thats probably not a bad thing.

About 7 years ago I worked at a RAAF base and hated everything about working there.

Industrial or domestic electrician ?

I'm a commercial sparkie, so, half-way between the two.actually, i was quite enjoying it. there's so much to learn and experience. plenty of cool stuff to see and sit in.

oh well, back to the job search...

The next chapter in this long winded tale of mildly annoying occurrences;

I have a temporary job on a 3 week shutdown in Gladstone. The pay is unreal, but the hours are long. Oh well it might be a foot in the door to something bigger and better!

Yeah, I only need to do 5 a year and I've got the same money I was on in Brisbane, I'm pretty sure I can get more than that. The money is unreal.

I've lost track of the number of permanent jobs I've been offered whilst doing temp work. Hopefully something comes your way, even if it is more shut down work.

Good score joshman.

Did you end up doing any upskilling to get into the shutdown job?

Not even mate. If you've got your instrumentation ticket or know anyone who does, they're in high demand up here.

And by the looks of things, I might be up here for a while.

Joshman,

There are a few guys on he forum up here in "Happyrock".
Just give a shout out if you want a few suggestions for places to go driving.

Regards Murph

Well done Josh. Be back up there myself in a couple of weeks. While your up there have a look around. I wouldn't think it would be too hard to score a permanent gig. If your lucky you might get time on=time off. seems to be a bit of it around up there

Yeah mate this temp work has already turned into something semi permanent, so I'm making arrangements to relocate up here.

You will find rent to be extortionate here mate. Try to get it worked into the contract
if you can. Mine went up $95/week a few months back. I have heard worse though.

Buying is also a bit steep but at least it is an investment.

No worries mate, I'm staying with a mate and my rent is $55/week cheaper than what I was earning in Brisbane. At the moment I'm playing it by ear, but things seem to be looking pretty long term, so that's how I'm thinking.

We'll have to go for a wheel sometime.
