Guys......

After installing extended shackles, I now need to consider replacing the rear shocks to gain the full benefit of the extended shackles for extra wheel travel.

I removed the rear shocks to see what length of shock I would need and found out that I need a shock with the following Compression and Extension:

Extension: 660mm
Compression: 450mm

I don't want to spend BIG money, so I'm after some comments on what brands of shocks I could get...... or is there another vehicle make that has the same eye-eye shocky that I could also possibly use?

cheers....

GQ patrol rear shocks 650/410
Cheers

Thanks for that John.... Would there be any issues putting a shock that was designed for a coil vehicle onto a leaf sprung vehicle?

I had always thought that there was different characteristics between the Coil & Leaf sprung shocks ?

What sort of $$ would I be looking out ?

Rob

I would also expect anything made for D22 with a 2" lift would be fine, have seen Bluepac on eBay for reasonable prices with a decent reputation, actually the supplier was in
Queensland, something like auto parts specialists.

Rob how did you go here?? I am about to shove some shackles in for more clearance and was wondering about the shock travel myself.
I`m running 2" Tough Dog at the moment and want to ensure they are sufficient.

I've sold my D22, but I did end up installing the Extended Shackles and longer shocks and it went ok...... except for a small vibration in 2nd gear only around the 30kms/hr mark. I put this down to the extended shackles changing the angle of the diff. If u do go ahead, "make sure" u measure the distance between the ground and the rear diff pinion flange. Then once your extended shackles are installed, re-measure to make sure the distance is the same as b4. If not, u may need a thin wedge to get the angle of the diff back to where it should be.....

For anybody that maybe interested, I removed my extended shackles and NEW longer shocks before selling my D22. Both in excellent condition and only done little kms. The shocks have a 3yr/100,000kms warranty on them too. The Brand of Shock is Ultima4x4.
Shock Measurements -
Top Mount: Eye 16mm ID Rubber
Bottom Mount: Eye 16mm ID Rubber
Open Length: 635 mm
Closed Length: 375 mm

Im running 2inch superior shackles atm. Waiting for my 3inch bilstein shocks to turn up. Should have them next week. I'll let you know if the shocks give me more wheel travel. I couldnt be bothered pulling the shocks out to test the flex, so just gonna wait to install the new ones. I dont seem to get any vibrations

Bildtein are supposed to be good. I think the vibrations is not consistent some get it others don't. Yeah I was going to go greasable and probably from superior as well.

Ring john at zordos suspension guys, not only is he a forum AND muster sponsor but he knows his stuff!
When I told him what I've hot he straight away changed my rears to hilux shocks for their extra length.....

Hi lux shocks hey, yeah I may have too I'm running tough dog at the moment but have converted to a steel tray which I'm sure weighs about the same as the tub. So it's not a weight thing but a shock travel thing.

I hadnt even thought about longer shocks, but with my extended shackles and brake lines, i got longer to see if it flexed further! Mind you im in a D40 thou

i dont know the differences between the two sorry mate,
give zordo a ring hell tell you in 2 seconds flat!

Rob was this for a D40 or D22 mate?? if D22 I'm in.

The Pic I posted up previously are Hilux ones as well. With the extended shackles install these were the only ones I could find that would be long enough to the most out of the extended shackles & didn't break the Bank + they came with 3yr/100,000km warranty. Not too many that give that sort of warranty....but what they would be like long term I will never know now as they are just sitting in my shed.

U need to be careful which Hilux ones u get as some have a larger bolt/stud that the Shock attaches to whereas the D22 is a 16mm which the ones I got fitted perfectly....

Re: Vibration
For me ( & another person I know) the vibration was only ever noticeable in 2nd gear and only around the 30km/hr mark, otherwise u wouldn't have picked it (& most probably wouldn't)
