My definitive guide to D40 oil (I think)

Having recently had the timing chain replaced i decided that new oil was needed in engine/auto/transfer/diffs. The car has been serviced by various people including me but I wanted to start from scratch and know what was in it. My research on the engine meant that the D40 Diesel needs regular engine oil changes or the oil galleries to the timing chain get blocked.

I decided to flush the engine as well with a mixture 50/50 of left over synthetic oil (new) from other changes and diesel.

I went to Repco (as there is a reasonable chance of getting help as opposed to Super Cheap where the chance is zero)

I took my little list of specs from the manual and this is what i got.

Engine - Penrite 5w-30 ACEA C3 Enviro+ (Nulon have one but its often not in stock). The C3 spec is hard to find. 2 x 5l

Auto - It got Penrite Full Synthetic ATF (This was the only oil that conformed to the Nissan Matic J spec) It got 10l but you dont need that much as you cant drain the torque converter. I have a few litres left over.

Transfer Case - It gets the same as the Auto as the Penrite covers the Nissan Matic D spec as well. 2l

Rear Diff - This little gem gets Penrite Limslip 90 80w-90 GL-5/6 2l

Front Diff - Its the poor relation and gets Repco Brand GL-5 Hypoid 80w-90

Three filters as well. Ummm chinese or indonesian. I drained all the oils and interestingly the front diff was the only one with pristine oil. The rear diff had a grey tinge but my mate the mechanic says that was ok. ?? Not water.

The auto was a bit brown so glad its gone. Few specks of metal on the plug
but otherwise good.

So gave it an indo filter and a gutfull of home brew and started it. warmed it up but did not rev it or drive it. Drained it changed the filter for another indo one and filled it again with home brew.

Drained it, new filter and new oil as above and bobs your aunt. Doesn't drive any different but I am pretty sure now it has the right oil in the right places.

for the WA guys...
delo 400 is $99 for 20L at the caltex servo on balcatta rd in balcatta at the moment

just switched to it today from using penrite diesel 5 (semi synth)

Just did my oil change. Went from magnatec 10w-40 to liqui moly 4100 5w-40. For $75 for 5L it isn't cheap but since my navs done nearly 200,000ks I want only the best in her. Thoughts anyone????

The decision is entirely up to you. My car has less then 50000 on it and I use a 5w-30or40 fully synthetic by and American company Hi-tech. Yes its $70 for 5l but I don't really care. I want the best out of the nav and I trust what my mechanic puts in it.

Used to use penrite Enviro oil, it was good oil and well known.

Had the new D22 for 2 weeks now, went in to nissan for it's 1000k service (tyre kick) asked them to change oil and filter while it was there. Reciept says they used magnatec prof 15w-40. After reading all of this thread it looks like a few of the dealers use magnatec oil. I will be keeping this vechicle for a very long time and want it to last. Should i go with a better quality oil (synthetic) in the future or stick with what nissan put in it. Opinions please.

Ok, from the Farm Fest oil folks while i was there for a 2011 D40 MANUAL

Caltex - recommend 20 ltr lots of Delo 400 mineral 15w-40 $85.80
or Havolene Diesel Fully Synth 5W-40 $130.32 from any Truckstop Caltex.

LSA (Lubricant Specialists Aust) - Diesel Supreme - Synth 15W-40 $104.50
http://www.lsaoils.com/lsa-products/item/diesel-supreme-15w40.html

Gulf Western offered up:
Euro Energy 5W-30 Full synth no price given.
Eur-Syn E4 10w-40 no price.
or Top Dog Global Semi Synth 10w-40 no price.

Fuchs also have numerous diesel oils by the 20 ltr drum.

No contest buying oil by the 20 ltr is FAR cheaper than mucking about with 5 ltrs or 10 ltr bottles. Easily makes up for the near $30 / oil filter from Nissan. Now you all have no excuse for not saving some money when doing your own oil changes :)

IF you have a DPF fitted AUTOMATIC, then it is up to you to source compatible oil. They are out there, it just takes some effort on your part to locate them - like i did.

just wondering what is the best oil to use for my 2007 d40 navara stx diesel dual cab 4x4.

my mechanic says only use a semi synthetic.

what are the specific that i need to know about to go to super cheap and purchase.

cheeries

June 2010 D22 Model (YD25 pretty sure)
I use Nulon's 5w-30 Diesel Formula, I have only just put this in a week ago and it seems to be holding it's colour alot better than other oil. Usually it will turn black within a few days but this is normal i think?

anyone know the specs for oil for the 2.5ltr in d22. The owners manual only has a sae rating unless im blind... doesn't specify mineral synthetic any other quality's it should have

cheers krankin. synth or mineral does it need ant other specifics.
think i might just run delo it was good in my last ute.
