I have a D40 Navara 2010 and have just bought a 2012 Jayco Starcraft Outback. I have fitted a Hayman Reece WDH to the Navara but am concerned about the ground clearance of the spring bars once attached to the van. The draw bar on the Starcraft is down between the drawbar rails, not on top and I don't know if this is causing the issue. Any advice would be appreciated.

G'day,

Not sure what you mean by "the draw bar on the Starcraft are between the draw bar rails"?

Maybe take a photo.

If you are taking about the height of the spring bars to the ground and you have an adjustable shank, perhaps you could alter the height of the towball or change the angle of the towball.

Hayman Reece have several different styles of WDH so it is difficult givng advice without knowing exactly what you mean and what you have.

After a bit more thought I figure that you are saying that the coupling is attached to a plate which is welded to the bottom of the draw bar rather than at the top.

Presumably the van has larger wheels/higher lift/ground clearance than blacktop tourers and hence the requirement for the coupling to be at the bottom of the drawbar.

If these assumptions are correct, IMO the spring bars on a properly set up WDH hitch would not be any lower to the ground than any other van.

However the towball must be set to the correct height for the van.

Thanks Joe, you're right. The van is an Outback model (off road) and since posting to the forum I have spoken to a couple of other vanners towing with Navarras and their clearance is about the same and haven't had any problems.

If it is the Classic series of WDH (not sure about the other/s), adjusting the angle of the ballmount head will alter the number of working links of the chain and therefore lift or lower the spring bars.

Maybe it's fine like the others have suggested.
