Saw a thread on another forum and thought it might be good to reiterate here, especially with the upcoming Christmas travel. I'm not overly up to speed with these either so I made a PDF file and printed it out for the glovebox, I've attached it for anyone else that may want it.

Channel 40 is the New England highway channel. Around Thornton you switch over to 29 as the F3 and Pacific highway pretty much use 29.

Dave.

Channel 29 is also a Forrestry's channel in logging areas. While it's open it's generally frowned upon to do any more than call the trucks up before requesting another channel.

For anyone who's interested in local chatter Gippsland is covered but Chan 4 repeater and east Gippy used to be Chan 7 (These repeaters can be fairly easily confirmed for all areas of Australia). There's alot of locals on air or on the side at any given time on Chan4 round here but use any directions at your own risk

UHF changing to 80 Channel in 2011

Here is a link to another forum with details of proposed changes to UHF from 40 to 80 channels in 2011.
UHF CB Australia - News - Repeater Locations - History - Sales & More
Whilst the changes are not yet finalised, the new channels become available from January 2011 with 5 years transition to the new standards. The new standards not only include the extra channels but also a change from 25kHz to 12.5kHz bandwidth (to allow the additional channels slotted in between the current channel frequencies). If anyone is considering purchasing a new UHF radio then I suggest you check if it has the capability for the 80 channel operation (some radios can be programmed to accept the extra channels and reduced bandwidth) however it is likely many of the current 40 channel units will eventually become obsolete.
