Nissan now can supply the genuine bearings/seals etc. Problem is the parts system hasnt been updated to show it! I can post part numbers if you guys need?
 
Follow up post to my previous one...

I replaced both sides with these kits. The side that was leaking originally is looking good about 1000ks later with no leaks.

The side that WASN'T leaking originally is seeping ever so slightly between the axle and the backing plate. Not sure why as yet, going to have to pull the backing plate off and see what's going on in there.

Worst case I'll just buy another kit and replace the seals and bearing again.
 
Another quick update for those playing at home...

Neither side is leaking anymore. I suspect that the 'leak' following install might have been the grease applied to the inside of the outer seal running out and once that was finished its actually sealing now. Pulled the drums off on the weekend and they were nice and dry :)
 
How did you get the abs ring off the shaft?
I only replaced the seals and re pecked the bearings as I was unsure of how to press the abs ring off without breaking it.

I pressed it off and on with a press. I did it in warm weather which seemed to make a huge difference.

First attempt I pulled the axle out of the car and went to work pressing the ring off and it seemed really stuck on there. Put it in the sun, went inside for a beer, came back out and the axle was too hot to pick up by hand. Put it in the press with some gloves and the ring just slipped right off.

Used this lesson for the second one too - just put it straight in the sun for a while :)
 
Hi guys.
Last night I drove my STX 08 home from work turned right and CLUNK! Got home, pulled up in the garage put stands under and shit the rear axles have a a fair bit of movement.
This is when I started searching.
I found this thread and their really isnt that many about bearing replacement.
Generally I can do most work on cars etc but have never really played with a diff.

To pull out axles do you need to remove the diff cover to unbolt anything inside, or is it just unbolt from outside?
Do you drain oils?
Any chance for a bit of a step by step writeup? Nothing fancy.

Ive just got to wait from pdrdiffs geelong for reply on pricing as to whether I give this a crack myself or not and get them to do the press off and on.
 
No need to touch the diff. all done from wheel side and if you do one side at a time the diff oil will stay in when you jack up one side. The pressing part will be the hardest bit.
 
Thanks, hopefully wont be to expensive and ill get them to do it all. If not ill pull out and get it pressed.
 
I bought another diff a while ago so had the fun of stripping it. basically take off the wheels and the brake drums
There are 4 bolts holding the retainer plate and the brake backing plate onto the axle tube. Undo those then the axle will slide out. If the axle doesnt want to slide out as most dont.Put the brake drum on backwards and put some wheel nuts back on. You can use the drum like a slide hammer. Dont go overboard and brake the drum
Be aware you will need to support the brake backing plate and the diff I bought had some sort of washer that was like a fibrous material. When you pull the axles pull them out as straight as you can and support them so you dont put any stress on those disk things

Thanks for the advise, like the idea of the slide hammer. I'll figure out what I'm doing tomorrow for definite. I'm sort of glad I don't have to touch the diff coz I don't understand until I've physically played and shown how to setup.
 
So here are my options.
I can get a kit from Geelong for $80 a side and $70 in Melbourne but can't park a B double next to it.
A press 20t for $275 and Do it myself all up about $435 and keep the press.

Can pull out shafts myself and have a company do for $440

Or drop off, and pickup that arvo $550

I think I know what I'm doing.

Nah, I'd be getting them done, but depends if you want a press to use at some other stage....
 
Still ringing around, just rang another diff joint in geelong. "Its an actual prick of a job" he said. "You need a special jig and rex gorell will only sell whole axles" pffft
"Press it off and press it back on" I said and gave him the kit no. and all.
Ill have to get back to you.

Now got it down close to$307
$58.20 each plus gst
And a 12t press total tools $179
This will be done this weekend.

Its starting..
Question did you guys have issues with the bearing outer case?
Seems to be on tight.
Did you fellas just stick it in the vise and tap out the bearing out?

Bought bearings from Statewide Bearings, 84 Greens rd Dandynong Vic, for $60.50 inc GST a side and they will now be stocking them as their system says didn't exist.
Can park a BDouble out front on opposite side of rd. But I rang before to order and be sure their in.

Thats one side done. Damn thats all pressed on tight. Thought I was going to break my 12t press
 
Did you just put the press plates under the bolt on backing plate and press the hole lot off or did you press the ring and the rest some other way?
Need to do this myself and I have a simular press to you ..
