I use the premium diesel when i go to canberra the last few times to see what its like and the only difference i can see is less smoke but then i only run a tankfull every now and then so maybe if you run it all the time it might be better i dont no . With the premium petrol my 08 GT runs like a busted arsehole on standard ulp .

Hmm, I was in Heathcote VIC yesterday and the Caltex there on the edge of town had "Diesel" and "Truck Diesel"... I just used the truck diesel because it was a high flow pump and 3cent's a liter cheaper !

Yet another way for the bastards to take my money, oh joy!

Being Caltex my guess is the "diesel" and "truck diesel" is there to trick the stupid people into buying premium, it's amazing how many people run diesel have never tried to see if the faster flow bowsers actually fit into their vehicles.

Mind you filling up 280 litres of diesel in the truck with the standard bowser when you have no other choice is such a fun task I can see why people keep using the standard bowsers.

Haha yeah, the high flow pumps are awesome. Just got to be careful when she's almost full otherwise you can get covered in Diesel!

The caltex premiun diesel you speak of, is that branded as Vortex?

On another point - the Caltex diesel website linked by Tony informs us that any vehicle that runs on diesel is able to be run on biodiesel without modification. My Nissan hand book begs to differ on that and specifically says not to use biodiesel.
(I also refuse to run ethanol blend in the the wife's Echo as well)
thoughts/opinions?

As far as Bio goes the main reason car manufacturers say no is because there is no guarantee what is in it and they don't want a heap of warranty claims because someone drained the fryers at their local fish and chip shop thinking they could save a few bucks. It's easier for them to say a car shouldn't run on stuff that isn't readily available than it is to just say yes and try and figure out if its a genuine warranty.

I'm fairly sure you'll find the bio diesel debate was fairly well covered in another thread.

BP have been selling Premium Diesel in QLD for a while and reading the brochure i believe that D40 diesels should run the Euro spec low ash diesel. Caltex have been branding theirs as premium diesel now as well. Be interesting to no its specs. In fact around my area you can only get Premium diesel. There is no choice.

vortex diesel sold by caltex or all premium diesels have a diesel conditioner in them, i get more km`s, my ute runs alot smoother, less smoke. its all i use, i know this as i have done plenty of work at caltex terminal where they have diesel conditioner injection into the tankers.

I have kept accurate records for years of my fuel usage. I have done many comparisons with premium fuels. Some years ago when they first came on the market, I think about 1994, they were between 2 and 4c a litre dearer. I have looked up some records and back in 2006 when unleaded was running around anywhere between 135 to 145c a litre premium, or in Caltex's case, Vortex was around 8c a litre dearer. Over an extended trial period I discovered that factualy I could say that I was getting about 4c a litre better economy but not 8c. (2003 Magna AWD sports) I believe I got marginally better HP but that is not backed up by any definitive test. However the bottom line was yes, I gained 4c a litre worth but it cost me 8c a litre to do it. Now on the point of keeping your engine cleaner for longer and improve longevity, who is ever going to easily proove that point. Not many people keep their cars until some many thousand of kilometres later, the engine fails and can attribute better fuel to its longer life. The other thing today is 'premium',fuels are much dearer so we are still being conned.

As far as diesel, I now have a diesel Navara and have being buying Vortex because that is all that is sold at the local garage in Wingham NSW. (I also have a caltex fuel card) And it is also cheaper then standard diesel at the nearest pump in Taree. Fuel tests are inconclusive and although I may well keep this ute to the death I don't now I'll ever be able to say conclusively that its exteneded engine life was due to using premium fuels.

Its only 2c a litre more for the "premium". It smells a bit like castor oil.....2stroke to diesel anyone? The bowser nozzle is always clean and does not need a glove to handle unlike the high flows or the regular diesel bowsers. Does it make a difference? About 35km a tank based on my figures. Is it worth it? Perhaps it keeps the injectors cleaner, less particles in the fuel filter...Not sure but I feel good about work paying 2c a litre more to fill the Tuk Tuk.
