Am thinking of getting a Lokka installed in front diff before I get bash plates. I was quoted 570 delivered from 4wd Systems (they have them in stock so hopefully no delivery delays). Anyone recommend a mechanic (in the Bundy area) to do the install, not sure I would be capable enough to install this. May be prepared to travel to Brisbane for the install.

Hey mate, they're easy enough to do yourself, and it's a most excellent learning experience. If you've got or can get hold of a trolley jack and a significantly flat (and level) enough area, I might be able to help install it. I'm just up in Gladstone, I could possibly make a trip down to bundy sometime in mid December or on my way through just before Christmas.

Im in Bundy never done one but would probably be keen to give you hand if you tackle it yourself to see how they go. Im no mechanic but pretty handy. If your not keen on tackling it yourself with some help you could try stan peterson over east. I dont know if he would do it but hes a good old school mechanic

Would imagine id have all the tools needed to if your shy on tools. Idont lend tools but your welcome to use them if im there

I've definitely got all the tools, I installed my lokka myself at Easter. The only thing I don't have access to up here is a trolley jack, and it's one of the best thing for doing this job.

Thanks for the replies guys. How does your Lokka perform Josh? After installing one of these are you glad you went that option or do you wish you went the air locker option?
Correct me if I am wrong but these Lokka are NOT? engaged while in 2wd or in 2wd with the front hubs engaged? The Lokka is only engaged when 4wd (hi or lo) is selected so the transfer case is driving the front diff? (Please excuse my lack of knowledge).
How long did it take you to do the install at Easter?
What 'spares' should I have on hand when it comes around to doing the install?
Thanks again

Yes you are right unless the front prop shaft has power going through it, the diff will not hinder your driving at all. Only thing I wonder is how it is on sand. Does it make driving harder.. What about thrashing through mud? Hear of a lot of people smashing cvs

Hey mate, it's awesome. It really helps with the long hill climbs and gives you a lot more control in sticky situations. Obviously having it always engaged can sometimes be a hindrance rather than a help, but with some slights adjustments to your driving style, these can be easily overcome. In all reality it's cheap and fool proof mod that increases the ability of your truck a good heap. And being purely mechanical in nature, there's very little that can go wrong.

And you're completely correct with your description of how it drives, it's only locked when it's got power coming from the prop shaft.

Driving with it engaged makes the steering feel "heavier" than without it, and in sand it can be a bit trickier, and can require a bit more care while driving.

I'd allow a full day to do it yourself, but realistically it shouldn't take more than a few hours. Make sure you've got a mate to help (to bring your 'refreshments') especially when it comes to removing and reinstalling the diff and cross members. Make sure you've got the entire front end on chassis stands and a trolley jack to lower the diff housing down. An electric or air 1/2" ratchet gun works wonders, I've got a 18v cordless one and it saved A LOT of work. Rings spanners and socket set are mandatory. Also have some nickel based "anti-sieze" on hand for re-assembly, it'll help everything last a. It longer and make future removable heaps easier. Also a wire brush for cleaning down bolts and stuff before putting back in. Have some liquid gasket as well for re-sealing the diff and what not.

If you PM me your email, I can shoot through an installation PDF I created from a thread that another forum member posted about the lokka install.

How does that work, I'm thinking with a locka you should be going a bit easier not harder on the go pedal

Well, you don't really take your time in mud? Momentum is your friend in mud and if you're locked and bump any hidden rocks there is the chance of smashing cvs.

im with FB on this one!!!
i had a lokka in for about a month and took it out because i found it was doing more harm then good.

i had never busted a CV with out a lokka and the month i had it i went through 3!!

my money will be spent on an air locker so i can use it only when i need it.

You thinking about a locka fb

Definately wanting to eventually. That's the only thing holding me back. Just it being a hassle when driving sand that requires a lot of turning and driving mud.

Driving the sand give you strong forearms and shoulders.

Nah it's alright, but you need a lot of momentum if you hit the soft stuff.

I'm lazy but and hen spending a week on fraser, the last thing I want is a constantly locked front end

But then you also lose complete drive to that wheel where as an open diff still give a bit of power at times until one loses complete traction.
