Just returned from a 5 day trip to the ridge. Plenty to see and do if you are motivated enough. we stayed at the Lightning Ridge Resort and Caravan Park, cost $20 a night for a powered van site, has clean amenities, hotel, pool, restaurant.
Go to the visitors info centre and get the info on the red, blue, green & yellow car door tours. They take you to old and current opal mining sites, plus plenty of other interesting things to see along the way.
No KFC, MACCA'S, PIZZA HUT or HUNGRY JACKS to be seen, very refreshing.
A must do is a visit to the hot bore baths just out of town on the Collarenabri rd, these are fantastic, but are always quite busy so I suggest going as early in the morning as possible.
The John Murray gallery is a must see, and if you have deep pockets you will spend a fortune there.
Amigos castle is fascinating, as was the black hand tour.
You will see endless piles of dirt which are mine diggings, and quite often they don't fill in the holes once they are finished with them, so be careful letting young kids wander around unsupervised.
Couldn't find a decent coffee shop in town, and the best feed can be found at the bowling club which is always very busy.
Overall a good couple of days away and beats sitting at home watching the idiot box.
