ironman 12000 lbs winch.

To the guys who have ironman winches. do you know if those winches get hot under usage. i was putting my new dyneema rope on the winch and out of curiosity i put my hand on the winch after having it on for a good minute and i found it really hot. even the main shaft was warm. is this normal or there s something wrong with the winch? Also do they all sound rough?? As in a grinding noise while turning? Or again there s something wrong with mine? Thanx for your input.

are they oil or grease lubricated?

Not too sure mate. they dont have any nipples for grease

I beleive that most are grease lub'd so pull it out rip the cover off where the gears mesh the spool and maybe add a bit more grease. How old is it?

mates winch was cooking winching up a muddy hill...wouldnt think it would cook just winding in the spool with no load

It s the motor side that s getting hot. the gear side s fine.

its normal for them to get hot under working conditions maybe get a heat gun and find out exactly what the temp is.
