I use a fish scale on a wheel stud.That's pretty much what iv always done, I don't always torque it either usually just do it up with my hands using the speciality tool and Bobs your aunty. But I'm more of a backyard mechanic.

You only need to really check it like tat if you are changing the bearings. If you are only repacking them then mark the locking nut and count the turns and put it back together exactly the same.
