Forums have always helped me with my car in the past. Time to give back. Now begins my series of DIY upgrades to my car. Seeing as I collected the info, I've noticed there hasn't been a place I can find where the info is all in one spot. I'm trying to change that.
Disclaimer: Do this, don't do this, this is up to you. I eat crayons so what do I know, I'm just trying to be helpful.
Difficulty:
1/10 - Amateur Hour
Tools:
12mm socket and wrench
Locktite
Useful info:
Carrying capacity: 300kg combined
Support cable Hole to Hole dimension: approx. 42.5cm
Support cable length: 44cm
The OEM D40 tailgate cable will be a direct replacement. Any cable with the above dimensions should also work. Cable can be shortened if you drill custom holes in the tailgate or if you connect to the bolt close to the body instead of the bolt closer to the edge (like I’ve done) on the tailgate. Got my cable off eBay.
D40 cable part number: A-TS20418
TOTAL COST: $40
Justification:
If you have a rear step on your D22, your tailgate might be resting on the rear step and the OEM supports not actually holding anything up. This was mine… Obviously it is destroying the paint and will eventually bend the rear panel if you load it.
DIY:
Step 1:
Remove the 3 x 12mm bolts and remove the existing arm completely
Step 2:
Locktite and replace 2 of the bolts, one on the tub one on the tailgate, closest to the edge of the tailgate. (the left bolt in the image above). They should be tightened just enough to allow free spinning of the arm as the tailgate moves up and down.
Step 3:
Remove the little rubber stoppers from the previous tailgate arm. Wont need them anymore and they get in the way when closing.
Finished product:
