Hey guys..

I've been getting a P0340 code with the car stuck in limp mode now :(

I've put it into a workshop, and they "THINK" it is the Timing Chain stretched, and that it's throwing the timing out.. One for their technicians is ex-Nissan and says he's seen something similar previously..

The car has been to Nissan previously to fix an P0335 fault and they never mentioned a possible timing chain problem.. But that's nothing new if only the apprentice worked on it..

Can someone shed some light on this.. I've had nothing but drama's from day 1 of getting this Navara, so I am just bummed about the whole deal.

Warrantly is not an option.. It has 190K on it..

If I where to get the yd25.com kit, could it be done at home, or is it a specialised tools / workshop type deal?

Many thanks guys..

Far out Nissan tried to do the same to us (for the Pulsar) similar codes cam sensor. I get the feeling they keep trying to to brush it off until it's out of warranty. They wanted $600+ just to inspect for chain/tensioner wear.

I put up a link to a couple of videos I found online with a stretched chain rattle, compare it to yours and have a listen.

P0335 is Crankshaft Position Sensor.. Nissan believed it was a faulty earth that was causing it.. Charged me $700 to fault find it..

P0340 is Camshaft Position Sensor.. Replaced sensor and also checked all signals and cabling - all checked out ok..

The workshop it is currently at (not Nissan) has diagnosed "They think" its the Timing Chain based on Ex Nissan Tech's priors..

The kicker is, the workshop where I had it dropped off to does not do engine work, so now I have to find a workshop that does, and get the car there...

Hey mate I have recently fitted the yd25 double row kit at home not too many dramas need to make up a few tools mainly to lock the harmonic balancer and pull it off. I have recently been contacted by him though to say the parts he supplied and I fitted have been showing excessive wear and he will come around and refit new chains to my engine. Will keep you posted on the outcome.

I had Nissan replace the timing chain guides on my VQ40 under a "good will" claim. reckon they had never heard of it before. I showed them a TSB from Nissan US. They said yeah we can fix it. $3800. I said no way. Rang Nissan Aust and had them put in a good will claim. Bingo, free. Any way they never heard of it on a petrol in oz but was told a TSB was put out for the timing chain guide on the YD25.

Hi guys, first post on here.
I've had a few issues with my D40, latest of which is the timing chain.
Just took it in yesterday for 50000km service, asked them to check the timing chain whilst they were there (I had seen on here and elsewhere of problems).
Glad I asked, got a call back saying it has stretched, needs replacing along with a page of other warranty covered items.
I got the D40 Dec 2011, so 18 months old for the 50000kms. I think nissan gamble on the chains lasting 3 years to get them past the warranty period. If your getting close to the end of your 3yrs/100000kms I'd get them to have a look!

Well based on some science and some gut feeling, I am replacing the timing chain on mine tomorrow.. The whole kit and caboodle..

I figure it's either jumped a cog, or is that rooted that the timing between the Crankshaft sensor and Camshaft Position Sensor is out enough for it to keep throwing up the CPS code and not being able to clear it from Limp Mode..

Wish me luck!

Good luck. Do you guys regret buying a D40 now ?

The common timing chain threads on here steered me away from a D40.

I have no regrets buying my Dmax.

Dave - I can tell you i've owned the car 2 months, and done less 1000km on it - it's been off the road that much.. Infact for the last 2 weeks it's bounced from workshop to home trying to sort the limp mode..

So far I've had
1. Main Earth cable replaced - putting the D40 into random limp
2. DPF Error'd twice... one just 100km taking delivery, and then again 200km after the dealer "regen'd" it... Hence it's been fk'd off!
3. Clean and flush the Intercooler due to it being filled with black tar
4. Constant Limp Mode - making it untrustworthy to drive any more than to the shops and back
5. Replace timing chain.

Now considering I got it 2nd hand, it may mean I have a lemon and someone sold it off before it cost them - but I did have it "checked" and it all come out ok.

Anyway, i am *really* hoping that the timing chain kit will do the trick and sort all the problems with limp mode, no power and restore my confidence.. Otherwise I'll get rid of it..

It's not endearing me right now, I can say that..

Having to clean and flush the intercooler sounds like it's blowing a heap of crap into it that's not normal why would they clean and flush it if it was full of "tar" and not investigate the cause?.

John - who knows... All I know is that I feel violated every time it goes into a dealership - and it won't be seeing another one in my ownership.

Getting *stung* $700 for them to diagnose (incorectly as it turns out) a "corroded main earth", even after I had cleaned it myself ensured that..

On the upside, I've learnt a SH!T load about Diesels, and working on them - so there is the silver lining..

Downside is this thing is a cash whore!

If could be some simple thing when they are set up correct they are a damm good thing performance and economy in one is there a workshop with that sort of knowledge that you can take it to not associated with nissan?

I think all will agree about dealers they lost me when i took mine in for wty the snorkle was vibrating on the inner guard when i got it back an old pair of work socks was shoved in the guard need i say more , i got a nissan keyring and stubby holder when i arched up anyway battle on it may hopefully be something minor.

2 brothers I work with bought 2 D40's. I tried to talk them out of it.

These vehicles were decked out and $60,000 each. Both have limp mode problems. One started doing it at 2000km's, the other at 7000km's.

These are decked with Excel trays, ladder racks etc.

Nissan keep giving them excuses.

bummer hate when you hear of someone getting a lemon, such a dog thing to do to another person (sell them a car that is fked).

I would recommend that before you do anything at all - get the car to a good diesel mechanic. There are mechanics and then there are those that know stuff about diesels and especially modern diesels. Ask around the local 4WD clubs etc. If you are near Canberra I would recommend Cooma Diesel or Queanbeyan Diesel both of which are top shelf when it comes to the diagnosis and repair of modern diesel engines.

the cause is simple....untill the EGR is blocked and a reputable catch can is fitted the buildup will keep coming

Pete - I tried exactly that.. ask around.. and I got mates of mates, and dealerships.

Finally when I *thought* I had one sussed, rang them and told them the issue then had the car tray-backed to them - for them to tell me 3 days later that they "think" it's the timing chain and they don't do engine work, some come pick it up and take it too a dealer.. That's annoying!

They guy I had look at it now is a 10 year diesel mechanic - so fingers crossed he knows what he's talking about..

And no, I did not buy a Jeep, but I certainly bought a lemon.. Definitely got stung on this one. Who ever you are that traded it on with the known faults without disclosure, I hope karma bites you on the arse, and hard!

Anyway - I just want my truck to work.......

@Krakin - I bought the EGR block and have fitted a catch-can... All of which will surely work if I can ever drive the car again.
