I'm sure this issue has had lots of exposure on this forum....my D40 is going well but with 75'000km coming up I am told that my timing chain may need replacing....there is a huge amount of varying comments available in relation to this problem...I'd like to cut to the chase.
My opinion based on what I have been able to determine 'fact from fiction' is that I would be advised to replace the chain and that I should have a duplex chain modification carried out...my question therefore is directed to anyone on here who may have fair dinkum information....i.e. not something they read somewhere.
I live in Brisbane I am considering having the duplex chain modification performed by a professional here, has anyone had this job done and if so I would love to hear from you....who did the job, how much was it and are you satisfied?

Many Thanks,
Paul.

The timing chain does wear out prematurely with some models, depending where there made originally. not sure if 75 k would require a new chain as this seems a little low in life. is your chain making any noises ? you can get the chain free play measured to see if the chain is stretched. there is a nissan specialist in brisbane that does this work plus supplies the dual row chain kits etc etc. i can,t think of there name but someone else on the forum will name this specialist. so don,t be too concerned yet as any ticking noises etc most often turn pout to be something simple from what i have heard.

It's probably yd25.com.au that you are talking about.

To the OP, I would just get yours checked out by them, appears to only take 10 mins.

"Don't stress about your timing chain. We do free timing chain check using a Pico Scope. This is hi end diagnostic equipment found in few workshops. We show you on the computer the exact digital readout of the crankshaft and camshaft position captured over 30 pages. After this check you will be fully informed as to the status of your timing chain. You need to book in for this check. The check takes about 10 minutes to do. We do the check at out premises next to the Brisbane airport."

I put the yd25 dual row kit into my 2007 stx a few years ago. Couldn't be more impressed

$2,500 is a good price for the supply and fitting of this upgraded timing chain kit. there is alot of work involved doing this job .

Another quick point, dont wait till your timing chain gets noisy, replace it ASAP

I had mine snap at 70,000 ks with no rattle or warning whatsoever, 2007 4wd STX d40 spainbuilt

Had to replace the head too because the pistons hit the valves
when the chain let go

Getting it checked first is the best step. 2012 models didn't seem to have many chain failures, about 2009 were the last of the cars that we saw these complaints commonly.

And my own 2009 (July manufacture, October delivery) STX has 305,000km on the clock and still on the original chains. I'm on my 2nd SCV, 3rd viscous hub, my 4th turbocharger, my 3rd BCS was booted out in favour of a Tilix valve and my DPF sensors have been replaced thanks to auggie. Other than that it's been normal wear and tear - a wheel bearing, couple of transfer case seals, one uni joint ... and we tow a lot, we spend last school holidays wandering out to Wilcannia, White Cliffs, Lightning Ridge, Moree, Glen Innes and back home again. We were going to go to Cameron Corner but decided our tyres may not be up to the task so we opted to change the trip.

Why so many Turbo's? Starting to think the zd wasn't such a bad choice ! Apart from having to do the I.P that is ;)

^ Indeed. Actually the 3rd turbo hadn't failed, it was misdiagnosed but replaced on advice from others as "the most likely candidate causing the problem", so in reality there's 2 failures and I have a perfect condition spare. The original factory turbo blew its bearings to bits (lots of towing in the outback in scorching temperatures) and the Forefront replacement shat itself probably because of the mountains we've been climbing.

I've adjusted my Tilix valve to provide slightly less boost than before. Fuel consumption hasn't varied by a great deal but hopefully the reduced pressure (peaks at about 18.6psi now) will translate to a bit more longevity.

mine was done at 265k, was making a 'swishing' noise as it wore the guides out, i bought my d40 second hand, and have no idea if it was done prior to me buying it,

cost a fair chunk here in perth to get done
