D40 Malfunction Indicator - steady amber after flat battery

Hi All,

Been a member here for a while learning what I could about others experience with their D40s. Mine has now after 3 years thrown up a fault that i cant find any reason for. Hoping there might be some simple solution....any help greatly appreciated.

After leaving the vehicle for 2 weeks I came home to find a totally flat battery. took a while to get enough charge into it to jump start. Once running the Malfunction Indicator light came on steady amber. Book says this indicates "an engine control system malfunction has been detected. Have the vehicle inspected...."

Following the an advice here on the forum I attempted to reset the ecu by disconnection the battery and draining the power by pressing the brake light. this worked, and I drove 20kms down the freeway. After turning off the car for about 1/2 an hour I restarted the car, and within 1 minute the MI light was back on.

I repeated the above process, and again the car was fine until started the 2nd time. Im about to go get a code reader to see what codes are reported. Ill post this once I have them. Any suggestions very welcome.

I haven't got the handbook in front of me. Was only reading thru it the other night for a friend
There's was 2 things I read that you should do after a flat/ battery change.
One was turn the car on, put the driver window down then hold it for 5 or 10 seconds after you put it back up?
The other I can't think of off hand but will update when I'm home if you like. Thought it was strange and that's why I remember reading about it

Thanks Manning - have a feeling that relates to resetting the auto window up function
Bought a code reader today- codes reported were;
METER/M&A- 1FAULT - U1000 - CAN COMM CIRCUIT
BCM - shows 1 fault but no code when you drill down
ENGINE- 1FAULT - EGR SYSTEM - P0403 Exhaust Gas Recirculation System - ($12)

$12 would be a good outcome. Also had the battery and alternator tested - no issues there. Would these three faults all be related to one issue? Thanks in advance...

Probably not related but I knew it was something to do with battery disconnection haha

After starting the car, 20 minutes wouldn't have been enough driving to give the battery a decent charge. It's also possible that the battery has had a terminal failure meaning it'll never recover.

A completely flat battery can cause erratic codes to pop up in the ECU. Replacing the battery with a good one and resetting the fault codes (Bluetooth OBD + Torque app work well here) usually fixes the problem.

Hey Tony - thanks for the suggestions -

I did get the battery checked at super charge after charging overnight on a trickle charger. Guys there were helpful, I've learned that I should get a charger that switches off once the battery is charged as the acid will then boil and evaporate - new one to me.

Apparently the battery and alternator were ok. Guys at my workshop referred me to a diesal fuel system specialist in Sunshine West (Melbourne).

They pulled out the egr valve which was faulty (flap stuck)....put in a catch can, and 2ndry fuel filter (my 2008 has no way to drain water from the fuel filter).....they've then suggested that the timing chain is pretty noisy - (I asked them to assess it) so the job kind of grew. It was definitely sounding noisy over the last couple of weeks.

I need the nav to work from, often doing 300-400 kms a day driving from job to job - SA VIC and southern NSW - job sites can be pretty remote - so really dont want to be caught ks from anywhere....

Ironically, the code resolved on the morning trip to drop the car into the diesal mechs, and went back to running as it should.

Will give you an update on the outcome when the jobs done and final damages are served.
