G'day folks,

My wife and I bought an RX Navara recently and I have a question regarding the 4x4 driveline. I had the impression that the D40 navaras ran permanently locked front hubs and the front diff and prop shaft turned all the time even in 2x4, same as an old 45 series cruiser or Willies jeep.

Quite a few people have tried to tell me that they have automatic freewheeling hubs either side of the diff, similar to an ML Triton or Colorado. I haven't seen any wiring or vacuum hoses running into the front diff but I can't turn up a definitive answer to this question anywhere on the net.

Does anybody know for certain? Auto freewheel hubs or locked hubs?

Welcome.
No you are right the d40 does not have hubs so the front drive line is constantly rotating.
The stud pattern is the culprit as it leaves no room for a hub to be installed even aftermarket.
There is no hub to lock just a bearing and a drive shaft.
