got my exhaust done
sounds nice got a good note
but only one problem
when i drive i cant hear no turbo
is it normal to not hear it in the cab and can only hear from outside or have i bought a dud exhaust?

yep sounds like they haven't changed the dump.
i dont think there would be a great difference between 2.5" and 3".
the main difference will be the dump pipe and the choice of mufflers & cat.

Well hopefully when I take it back they don't charge me fortune for the dump pipe if so is it straight forward to change
And any places that sell them cheap

to change the exhuast over from cat back, could easily be done in half an hour. there's nothing to it.

the dump takes a bit longer.

i'd say the easiest way is to unbolt the exhaust from the cat, unbolt turbo and lift the turbo, dump and cat out as one.

then separate the turbo from dump & cat, the 2 lower studs will probably need to be removed and replaced with bolts or shorter studs. you can remove the studs without removing the turbo but id say it would be a bit fiddly, but you will need to get them out to be able to get the dump off cos there's not enough room between there and the firewall.

then bolt on new dump pipe, bolt turbo back on and bolt up exhaust.

not too hard, might take a few hours, just take your time. a good assortment of sockets and ratchet ring spanners will be necessary.

Hey guys im just looking at getting a 3 inch mandrel bent turbo back system custom built. I was quoted 950 fitted. Is that ok. Some of you here have got them cheaper. But mine needs to work around my spare which is a 33 so not a lot of room. He said he could take it over the springs or is that a bad idea. Any help or ideas would be great

Its probably not a bad price. Comparable to something like a beau desert but custom made to suit you

Had a successful day today
Took my car to professional exhaust and got the dump pipe done
But as I left I noticed it only sounded a little different
So when I got home I removed the rear muffle section and it sounded the exact way I was wanting it to
So came to the conclusion of the rear muffler is restricting it
I'd keep it like this but too loud and just spent 1000 on it and don't want it staying like this

So anyone have any suggestions on what I can do?

I may be wrong but will a rear hot dog make it less loud but keep turbo spool?

Btw thanks for your help ben85 appreciate it

i doubt a hotdog will change the sound of the turbo spool at all.
not sure how much differnce it will make to the volume.

if you removed the rear muffler the exhaust would terminate somewhere under the rear of the cab? this will make it louder esp when sitting in the cab.

did that on my ford, it was so loud you could feel it through the seats and the floor.

what did they supply on the system, cat and 1 muffler?

might workout if you had the muffler replaced with a straight through pipe.
probably wont sound as harsh with the exhaust finishing at the rear of the tray.
if thats still too loud for you then look at adding a hotdog.

there must be someone on here that has been through this and can shed a bit more light on the situation.

theres a few vids on utube of straight thru 3" no muf's/cat that sound alright, not too loud.

You need to give it some time to carbon up a bit too, they seem louder at first than what it will in a week or two. I built a 3" dump pipe back system for the 3.3td mk patrol I had, that had no mufflers and was as straight through as you could get, although it still had the factory dump pipe on it. That sounded wicked, like a proper truck but that was a straight 6 and had no cat so it had a lot better sound.

In saying all that, I have made my own 2.5" for the d22 from just after the flex joint back, it sounds nice but you can hardly hear it from inside and there is no turbo noise from inside either, but outside you can hear heaps of turbo noise. When I get time and money I will get a new dump pipe, 100 cell cat and finish the exhaust the rest of the way, it should sound better then...

I put a cross country top mount i/c on mine, I love it, In the cab you can hear the turbo spool up. And i just put a redback 2.5" exhaust with a straight through dump pipe. Its not loud but you can you hear the induction noise and the turbo spooling. I,m happy

That's the current system I have on
Want to change rear muffler for hot dog
What do use reckon?

might be alright. try it and see. if its still not loud enough replace the hotdog for straight thru pipe.
or just go a straight thru pipe.

Got mine built yesterday. 3" dump pipe no cat n a straight through muffler. I'm proper happy with it. It's not overly loud which is good cause it's only 4 cylinder they just sound like a tractor when they are too loud. It has bulk turbo spool noise and doesn't drone on the highway.

Nice
just ordered a hotdog should get it Tuesday and welded on by Wednesday latest Thursday, at the moment it just sounds like a waste of money but once the hotty is on sound like the money was well spent

finally got the hotdog on and still no luck, so over it now its really pissed me off, wasted all this money and just sounds little louder then stock, more power gain though must admit

cant seem to work it out, and dont wanna do straight pipe cause then will be too loud just htought the hotdog would give me that nice turbo spool but wont be loud

options anyone?
already got 2.5" exhaust, custom dump pipe, done by my mate at fabweld hotdog also installed by himself

need options its really doing my head in

Just a thought Jay. If it is noise you are after try putting in a K&N air filter and removing some restrictions before the airbox.

Being a Diesel it will not be "Too" loud if you have no muffler at all. Also the straighter your exhaust the better the gasses will flow and the easier the noise will travel.

Thanks for the fast reply
I'm more after turbo noise then anything
That's what's annoyed me so much I've spent at least 1300 trying to get the car to sound right but still no luck
Currently the car sounds more deep and lumpy but no turbo

When that's all I'm after

Just go straight through it wont be that much louder than just having a hotdog in there depending on what hot dog is in there. Also do you have a cat converter in the sysytem if so how restrictive is it. Do you have a snorkel not that it should really matter but i get a slight turbo spool whistle just through the snorkel with standard exhaust.
