Broken coolant sensor wire - Unknown

Hey guys I've found that when planning working on the now turbo'd QD32 that one of my coolant temp sensors is broken, the thing is I've noticed that not every QD32 or TD27 has this sensor and wanted to know what it was.

I thought this was covered here previously but could not manage to find any posts. There is also no mention of it in the D22 service manual that I could find.

Below is a pic of the sensor circled.

I wondered the same thing when I saw a mates qd didn't have it, mine does. Still don't know what it does
