Need a change, ordered some high school maths text books to get me back into it.

Its been 10 years since I left school, I cant remember most of the maths stuff I learnt.

I want an Electrical Apprenticeship.

good luck dave
i completed an adult apprentaship when i was 25 (refrig and aircon)
it was hard trying to support 2 kids on shit wages for 3 years
thank god for weekend cashies

Dave i was in the same boat as you, I was living in Mackay and applied everwhere for an apprenticeship. Its a bit hard as an adult, but i think the wages are better now than what they used to be. I was lucky and found a good job whilst applying for diesel fitter and engineering apprenticeships. As luck would have it, 2 places called me up for interviews after i started my current job. Just keep at it man. Oh and yeah i dont remember any maths, and i did 3 unit, so good luck with that!

Im just doing the second block of my first year electrical tafe. If you want to study up on the math get yourself "Electrical principles for the electrical trade" volume 1 & 2 by Jim Jenneson and "Electrical trade principles" by Jeffrey Hampson.
Its not so much being good at maths but trying to remember all the laws and formulas like Ohms law, Faradays law, Lenz law, Flemmings law and the list goes on. Ive started ready these books back to front and it helps

I wouldn't stress about maths to much I only done year 10 and about to sit my final exams now. If you knuckle down at trade school you will learn every thing you need to no. Most of it is just remembering what goes where.

I was out of school in year 9, am dumb as dog shit and just completed my final exams!!! I really had to knuckle down though

10 years out of school...sheesh laddy wait till you can't remember how many years it is since you left school :ha:

If you get really stuck on maths stuff give us a yell. No good with electrical but not too bad with the maths.

Shhhh there is older people on here than us and they'll start calling us young whipper snappers

My daughter started calling me old by the time she was 3, mind you she was prompted by her mother who is actually older than I am.

Hey Dave. If you want a similar good trade the aircon/ refridge is about par with electrical if you want to earn money or start your own business. I just finished my exams and got 100% so I'm chuffed the hard work paid off. I really really recommend either going through a group where you can get domestic AND industrial skills because I'm just in domestic and am ata huge disadvantage for applying jobs up in mines or gas. Moving into instrumentation or Plc soon though and I again recommend getting your cert three in instrumentation once you hit third year at tafe. Ask around if you can get one if not try to through a large company where you gain multiple skills from different people and don't waste time with the guys that have a that'll do attitude. Refrigeration is just or almost as good at earning money or supplementing via cashies

Yeah mine aint that old....but then I aint as old as you either :ha:

Edit: Going by things lately by the time Dave gets back on to answer any of these questions he'll probably have finished his apprenticeship!

wouldn't evan bother looking at domestic electrical for a mature age, most domestic companies are doing it hard and cant pay the extra to put you on, go straight into commercial/industrial (its where the real money is) and if your interested in the mines find somewhere that will duel trade you instro as most mines wont evan look at you without it these days. but yeh like old mate said dont worry about doing the maths just have a quick flick through the electrotechnology principles book and it will give you most of what you need, but 90% on the time you will never use the maths in industry unless your the one running or quoting jobs. and evan then its spelt out to you step by step in the rule book. if you can read a table and do some basic sums your in.
